I'm not there (again) yet; just my Subaru. I'll be back October 12 for good. :D

oh, I see I see. What are they doing to your Marty at ATS Racing?

Today I made a trip to the machine shop, they said they could have my stuff ready by monday, and that they are tracking down new rings and bearings to match my clearances. Awesome.

Also bought a Valve Lapping kit. Heres a video explaining the purpose. Some guys claim its helps to create a good seal between the valve and head, which helps with heat dissipation and prevention of burnt valves.

The machine shop also told me that my head WAS warped. So the lesson is, I suck at checking flatness, and that is not awesome: a bit of a confidence crusher there. So thank you all, for forcing me to humble myself and take my parts to be machined.

Also bought two types of assembly lube (one for cams and valves, the other for bearings), and plastigauge.

What else should I be doing at this stage?
Do any of you have experience with the Engine Enamel in a can? what is your opinion?

I'd say its money well spent. Now you can detail your engine bay and all the engine accessories. It'll look awesome!

THE ONE YEAR UPDATE.

IMGP4103.jpg

Yup, it has been a whole year now since I started working on this car, though it does seem like it has been a lot longer. Marty the MR2 (as I now call it) is now a sort of side project as I work on Emma the MR2 (the MK1.5 MR2 that I am currently building). Every now and then I will do something different with him in between jobs on Emma.
IMGP4106.jpg

The other day I finally got around to installing a brand new Clutch Slave Cylinder. The car struggles with a Stage 2 clutch, and I would advise anybody with a stock N/A MR2 to not bother with such a heavy upgrade. The problem is that I will often have a hard time pushing into 2nd gear. I already replaced the Master Cylinder some time ago, but with little effect. Putting in new transmission fluid also made a slight difference but still had problems. I also put on new shift link bushings. Replacing the slave cylinder has shown a major improvement. It still grinds sometimes, but not as easily. Apparently bad synchros in the transmission are a problem for these cars – I may need to buy a press and learn how to fix transmissions some day.
IMGP4107.jpg

I have nearly finished working on the interior. I stole the shift boot and knob from the MK2 MR2 that Emma’s engine is coming from. With a little cutting it snapped in perfectly. I was going to switch out the steering wheel but I actually like the feel of my large $10 cover. Interior needs to be cleaned desperately.
IMGP4104.jpg

Last week I also got rid of the glass muffler (did it all myself – just got a muffler shop to make some bends in piping - $30 of pipe and $50 for used muffler, $20 for tips). I put in a twin exit muffler from an Acura. It looks a little less “limp”, as somebody had once described my last muffler tip. Its also quite a bit quieter but sounds more tuned. I also replaced the painted tail lights with the stock black. It justs looks cleaner IMO.

The trunk lid sits a little crooked. I think I know how to fix it.
IMGP4108.jpg

Sometime soon I want to spend a few hours a really clean and power polish the exterior. I have a porter cable 7424 but just need to buy some pads and product.
My job on the car was far from perfect. But its 10x (may 8x) better than the paint that was on it. It’s not as dark of silver that I wanted but I still like it. It passes.

Next on the list for changes is a new front valance. I taking part in a group buy for a couple (one for Marty, one for Emma). They are in the process of being made and shipped from England from Paul Woods at Woodsport. About $400 shipped is the going rate. Will be infinitely nicer than the Dodge Daytona lip Marty currently holds. Blech!
IMGP4113.jpg

I don’t know what the future holds for Marty once Emma is completed (if Emma is completed I should say). All I know is that it has been a fun time working on it, and the ride is incredible fun. I sometimes think that the Dunlop Dirreza’s may have a little too much traction for the power (engine barely spins them, and bogs a little once hooked), but then I turn a corner at 45mph and cant stop grinning. Fun car, for sure. Excited to get the Mk1.5 going though!

Thanks everyone, once again, for the encouragement and input along the way.

Still waiting on parts for the Mk1.5 project. Tonight I did a little work on the silver MR2. I think I FINALLY figured out the source of the clutch grinding.
I adjusted the clutch freeplay. I didnt realize that my clutch pedal has two adjustments. One for pedal height before it starts pressing onto the master cylinder rod, and the other to adjust freeplay before clutch pressure is felt.
pedaladjust.png

The upper adjustment allows the pedal to move about 1-10mm without doing anything to the mastercylinder - to be in spec it should be between 1-5mm.
I found that the pre-rod free pedal freeplay was way out of spec. I tightened it to 1-2mm of play, and bam, for some odd reason, the car now seems to shift much smoother.
Weird.

It appears that you're now fully disengaging the clutch between shifts, it helps. :p

For the past few months there have been NO MK1 MR2's for sale in my area. So Ive decided its time to sell this car.

I put a big price tag on it. $4200.00 Have had a couple calls since yesterday afternoon.

All in all, this car was a HUGE money pit. But Im looking at it like I paid for an education on cars. Dont regret it one bit.

MOAR UPDATES!

Did it sell? Did you keep it?

Ya, I apologize guys. Ive been taking a car hiatus for a bit. Might have overdosed a little bit this past year. That and I have been very busy with work/life and Guild Wars 2 taking up a lot of free time. This past week Ive started to work on the MK1.5 again.

No, this Mk1 hasnt sold. I took it off the market till spring. I had one VERY interested buyer but he insisted on test driving it during the absolute worst possible winter conditions (Freezing rain followed by 3 inches of slippery, slushy snow.). Needless to say he didnt get a true feel for the car... he tried to test the engine responsiveness and managed to fishtail the car into oncoming traffic. Luckily, no collision. THese cars can drive half decently in winter, but you cant be an idiot.
Ill try to sell it again this spring when the market is a little more active and I dont have to worry about inexperienced winter drivers trying to kill me.

SOLD! Finally. Its for the better. I can tell the new owner will give it more love than I have been recently. Im happy that its going to someone that will care for it. I sold it for a couple hundred less than I wanted to, but feel comfortable with the idea that the value of this car was in the learning experience I gained with it.
