That right there is down right wrong. I wash my hands and maybe even my face in that sink and your kid is shitting and pissing in it.

They do this in China almost universally, from what I understand. It's funny how something that is borne from necessity (too poor for diapers) becomes a New Age "healthy" parenting technique in the wealthy.

Diapers are gross, but I am not going to stare at my child like a hawk to look for "signs" of impending waste production.

EXACTLY.
 
People in rural Africa and Asia do it because the probability is high that they are shitting on the ground OUTSIDE. There is no point wearing a diaper when you can just squat outside of your hut. The hippies travel and see this behavior and think they can bring it back to suburbia.
 
Middle ground FTW: by all means teach the baby but still use a cloth diaper as a backup. If successful most of the negatives of a diaper are negated and by the same token the rare failure is not a catastrophe.
 
My 14 month old wears diapers, but is to the point where she knows to hold it in and will indicate she needs to use her potty. She's been trained like that for a few months now, eventually she'll be diaper free, but for now I'm not cleaning up gobs of crap from all over my nice new apartment.

You know what? My kids wore diapers, but they ALSO smiled and were happy.
