Do not get a J colored stone, it will look bad. SI2 won't be bad unless you hve friends that carry magnifying glasses with them. An Excellent/ideal cut will give you a better fire than the other.

also, I deleted mine, but I got an email after buying my engagement ring there for $100 off for a friend. If you can find someone to refer you, bonus!

I would just like to add that when we were in St. Maarten browsing diamonds, the shop that we went to offered us approximately $100 more than what I originally paid for the the stone I bought from Blue Nile IN TRADE, meaning they had devalued it already.

go to diamondtalk.com and learn as much as you can about diamonds. I you're looking at stones in the .2 - .5 carat size, you may want to sacrifice quality to get a bigger size... but that's up to you.

More importantly, does your girl friend have certain expectation on a diamond size? Make sure you have a good idea in what she wants.

if at all possible DO NOT sacrafice quality for size. thats the worst of all... and you see it all the time.. girls have a huge rock that looks like a piece of glass.

OP, may i ask how old the two of you are? also, get what you can afford now. you can always upgrade in the future.
However, please make sure you slyly check what styles she likes, even if you have to ask her mom, friends, etc. SHE is the one that will be wearing this for the rest of her life!

diamond.com or diamonds.com will expalin all that cr@p to you. Along with what is visiable with the naked eye. You can create minimum specs using the info they have and get something based on that.

In short, color is hte most imortant aspect.

First of all, if you haven't already, go to the jewelers and ask to see an array of all the carat sizes from .3-1.5carat - just so you know what the relative size of the stone is according to its carat weight.

Quality over quantity. If you can get a stone that is better cut, less color, less inclusions but its 1 or 2 steps smaller, get it. The quality of the stone will greatly offset the size (or lack ot) of the stone.

If sounds like your girl is very sensible which is cool. Although a nice watch may have better useability than an engagement ring, get her the ring as that is more of an important symbol. Save the watch for like some anniversary or other present - but not birthday as that has its own meanings.

Sound like your gf is a sensible person. Maybe she would be happy with a Moissanite.

Moissanite and diamond brilliance/fire comparison.

She's suggested that many times and the prices can't be beat. I don't feel comfortable buying her one. Just knowing that it's a fake diamond seems weird to me. She said she wouldn't tell people, but that seems a little decieving, and I don't like that at all.

Moisenite is very nice. I've seen it myself at JCPenny, only thing is the hardness isn't as good as diamonds, but boy, doesn it sure sparkle. But like you said, I dunno if I'd be comfortable buying my fiance a moisenite ring, unless perhaps to just show off as a rediculously large diamond. Maybe get her moisenite earings...heh, and a diamond ring, or vice versa.
Hardness of 9.25 isn't bad. Diamond is 10, while Ruby and Sapphire is at 9.0

Mohs scale of "7 - Quartz (Amethyst, Citrine, Tiger's Eye and Aventurine): not scratched by a file"

moissanite has a Mohs Hardness rating of 9.25.

May I make a suggestion? If you are going for a smallish diamond, consider getting a large Sapphire instead.

Sapphires are beautiful and much cheaper than diamonds.

And to the OP, If I was considering getting married the girl would be getting at least a carat. In fact I can't imagine anyone getting a girl they want to be married to less then 3/4 of a carat. If you do something- do it right or don't do it at all. If you're gonna get her an embarassing ring you might as well get a few boxes of crackerjacks and you'll turn one up eventually. You'll save alot of money.

not that i'd get less than a carat either, but some people might not be able to afford that... so i can imagine people getting smaller rings.

A well cut 1 carat ring is going to run you at least 5 grand, which is much more than many people can afford. I went with a 0.6 carat ring in a platinum setting with an excellent cut. It was well within my budget and she was thrilled.

Go with Moisannite.

You can't tell the difference between it and diamond unless it is 2ct or larger because of the yellow color. I bought my wife a moisannite
pendant and she is more than happy with it.

Like OffTopic stated, it is a very hard gemstone. I think its the second hardest substance after diamond IIRC.

Moissanite is a lot of things... but there is one this it is not, nor will it ever be.... and this is a diamond.

Instead of going into a long lesson about diamonds... I will just say this...

Stay out of the malls.

Find a jeweler and tell him that you are looking for a jeweler. That you do not have a lot of money to spend right now, but are looking for a jeweler... that you can buy one engagment ring anywhere but want to trust someone that will be the jeweler that you will go to for every anniversary, mother's day, Christmas, etc. He will be honest with you, and give you a good deal while also educating you about stones and prices and etc.

:)

yellows are more expensive than clears

are you talking out or your a$$? the colorless diamonds (D) are by far more expensive than H-J diamonds.

i just got engaged. we went shopping for the diamond and ring together.

here's a recent thread about engagement rings

why don't you do some research before talking out your ass.

here is a hint, since you're clueluess: look for 'fancy yellow diamonds' on bluenile

i did enough research, and i did it with a wholesaler instead of some website that wants to profit more heavily than these real guys in the diamond district.

over a period of several weeks, i referred to books, documentation, and ultimately, diamond dealers. a colorless diamond is much more expensive than a colored diamond.
