DiamondMax 60GB, 7200RPM HDD at Compusa for $99 - No MIR

<< 2meg... good or bad? >>

unless you have a western digital SE hard drive, then the drives in your computer are all using 2meg buffers. i dont think anyone but Western Digital has released a hard drive with a buffer larger than 2megs. the bigger question here, IMHO, is whether or not this comes with a 1 or 3 year warranty and WHO will be providing the warranty service. if it's maxtor, then this is a pretty good deal cuz their customer service is top-notch (advance replacement warranty and typically the replacement drive you receive is BETTER than the one you sent in). if it's compusa, then this is closer to a cold deal since, again IMHO, they dont know what customer service is.

The linked page calls it a Maxtor drive, but shows a picture of a CompUSA retail box. I'm guessing it's a one year warranty.

Maxtor has been making compusa drives for several years now. All of the boxes I ever looked at said Maxtor on it somewhere. I couldn't bring myself to buy one though since most of them were 4500 RPM.

Anyhow I don't know what the warranty is for sure but I thought I read somewhere that the CUSA drives only had 1 year warranty.

Good deal thanks solo.

As an alternative suggestion, newegg sells an OEM ATA133 7200rpm 60GB Maxtor with the (extra quiet) fluid dynamic bearings for a whopping $103 with $7 shipping (and no tax for most people). The old-style bearing drive (still ATA133) is measly $96.

EDIT: for the lazy: Link

Another alternative to my original post is the stackable coupons currently valid at Dell.

These are the prices after 10% off and $10 off $100 at Dell Home. You still have to factor in tax and shipping.

60GB Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM Hard Drive = $93

80GB Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM Hard Drive = $114

Also, at CompUSA, they have a 60GB USB 2.0 external HD for like $140. Seemed like a good price to me.

I saw it in their flyer.

Just got back from Compusa (Didn't buying anything thoug) and they subsituted the compusa 60 Gb 7200RPM with a Retail Maxtor 60GB 7200RPM. That means 3 years warranty. BTW its the Compusa by Burbank, CA.

If the Compusa drive is 5400RPM, why not just get the 60GB Maxtor 5400 from Staples. It is $99.94 with a $20 rebate. Add some paperclips and use one of the $20/$100 coupons for better savings

i got the 60 "compusa" one, but its got maxtor badging EVERYWHERE on the outside of the box and drive and all... ATA133 also, for 99 at cusa this past weekend... seemed good to me

I got the Staples 60GB/5400 RPM one ($100 - $20 cpn - $20 MIR + tax = $66)
Should I keep this for about $40 cheaper? I think I'm gonna use it for backup or MP3 files.

maxtors are good.

you may not even need the customer service. I've been abusing my 10gb maxtor for over 3 years now.

Mfg Part #: L06J060G Looks like the one on sale this week has the liquid bearings stuff. gonna make a very quiet drive.
I think i'm gonna go grab one.

Guys...let's end this confusion now....THIS IS NOT A 5400 DRIVE, it's a 7200
