4500 rpm. Man, can they get slower? It's like the Quantum bigfoot series. Actually, it very well may be those drives.

This requires a mail in rebate. It looks like the rebate listed expired 8/31. Is there a new one?

definitely won't put it in pc, I know my 5400 rpm drive is slow, can't imagine how slow a 4500 rpm would be.

Um, hey guys... it's a 5400 rpm drive, Maxtor DiamondMax have never been slower than 5400rpm. Someone just made a typo and reversed the 5 and 4. It's a Maxtor drive in a CompUsa box, not a Quantum Bigfoot. Quantum bigfooot was 5-1/4 form factor, and was an oddity.

Correction, it could be a Quantum drive. Remember Maxtor recently acquired Quantum and is now putting Quantum drives into Maxtor boxes. Quantum was manufacturing some 4500 rpm drives before they were acquired by Maxtor (Lct15, I think). So it is possible. Of course, it is also possible that it is a typo, particularly since it is Compusa. But I would bet on the slow drive, it would also help explain the price. I also believe that the Lct15 had only 512K of cache, as opposed to the 2MB of cache on the Maxtors and Western Digitals.

PS I think the Staples deal for $99 for a 20 gig Maxtor 7200 rpm retail drive is better.

Not a typo, I had never seen a 4500 rpm until I this one in my hand at C/USA. At BB I bought a 40gig Maxtor in a different style box and it was "different" from my other 40, and it had Quantum's name along with Maxtors on the drive. Yep, I had trouble with it. The BB guy confirmed the drive was a Maxtor, but newer version that obviously Quantum had something to do with it. I returned it and got the Maxtor "only" version. No problems with it. The smaller boxes have the Quantum crap in it. I think these C/USA discount drives have been around for a while. Still trash, no matter who makes it.

Well, I'm with you in that I think the original, pre-Quantum Maxtor drives are better. If you go to the Maxtor site and look at ATA drives, there are three product line groupings.

DiamondMax Capacity family, 5400rpm:
536DX (new)
D540X (new)
DiamondMax 80

DiamondMax Plus performance family, 7200rpm:
Fireball Plus AS
DiamondMax Plus 60
DiamondMax Plus 45
DiamondMax Plus

FireBall entry family, 5400rpm:
541DX (new)
Fireball lct20
531DX

Of all all of those, the DiamondMax are all "original" Maxtor drives and are nice, IMO. The Fireball Plus AS is a decent drive too.
Those DX drives are all made to be cheap. I'd like to know what drive came in the first box you bought, Zonon, but I personally would have returned any other than the DiamondMax plus, which it sounds like you did.

I hate it when companies mess with their products so badly like this. I went to Fry's the other night and looked at their drives on display, just curious about the build quality of some new drives. I've never liked Western Digital drives, because in my experience they have been finicky of the other drives and controllers they were connected to. They were also loud, as in bearing noise. From the build quality on the drive I saw and the reports I have heard here and the few reviews that are out, I think Western Digital's new 40gig 7200rpm line (WD400BB), might be my next drive.

My local Compusa B&M store had no 20g 4500 rpm units in stock for their sale, so they were subtituting the regular Maxtor 20/5400 rpm models. The counter person said the rebate would be valid, even though the SKU numbers are different.

Still not that hot of a deal for a $80+tax 20g /5400 rpm and then pray that the $30 rebate works or even comes thru as valid.

Hell no. I have a 4GB Quantum Bigfoot in one of my HPs - it came with it. The thing is a beast. It's loud as hell. Being that I sleep in the same room as that computer, I do NOT leave the system running. The clicking is way too loud to sleep through. Reads/Writes, it does not matter. It's a very loud drive. I would avoid buying Bigfoots. The only plus is that transfer rates are pretty fast. That's mostly because the platters are so far, and the further the head goes on the platters, the faster that information is going to be rotating. I've managed a 4MB/sec. steady transfer benchmark on it before, but damn is the thing LOUD!!! :)

Sounds like a jet airplane when it spins up too, so that's kind of fun. :D

DiamondMax 20 GB EIDE Ultra ATA/66 3.5-inch 4500 RPM, Internal Hard Drive

This is not a Bigfoot. It is 3.5in formfactor not 5.25in. Bigfoot stopped at ATA33. This is 20GB, biggest BigFoot was 19.2GB.

I bought the Maxtor 40GB Diamond Max Plus 2 weeks ago and it had that new damn Quantum... Bios in 3 PC's wouldn't recognize it... So i went and swapped for the Older Large Box and it had the Maxtor....

This might be ok for MP3 storage or CD images... but $80 before rebate? I am still waiting for some CrapUSA rebates and refunds... Company still owes me for the Iomega 12/10/32 in January!!!

Here in St.Louis at the Dorsett/Maryland Heights store, it was a 5400rpm Maxtor drive in a Maxtor box. $79.99 - $30 rebate.
