Diamond Smart USB 56 modem

I have a Diamond Smart USB 56 modem and am having trouble with it making a connection while faxing. When I try to fax a document from Word, it invariably gives me the message "There is no answer", even when I am faxing to a machine that I know is working. Any ideas?

Sounds like Windows isn't talking to the modem. Is the driver loaded? Have you configured the modem properly? Is the cable that connects the modem to the phone jack plugged into the proper jack on the modem?

Yes modem driver is installed and jack is plugged in properly. I don't know if it's properly configured. Do I need a initialization string?

Is it a fax modem? I'm not sure what the difference is, but the distinction was always made on the box.
