I bought my wife a diamond (0.85ct radiant cut, E VS1) roughly a year ago when i proposed. But I bought it because I had the money--and I spent what I thought was reasonable. I encourage ANYONE to do the same. Going broke to buy an expensive diamond is ridiculous--they say half of all fights between newly married couples are about money (and having the money for that ring could come in real handy when moving into your first house--which she will want to redecorate--or making your first bills).

One interesting idea (that a friend of mine actually DID): if your fiancee is really "into" diamonds, but you don't have the cash--buy a nice ring with a cubic zirconia the style that she likes, and then promise her to put a diamond in its place when you two are financially on your feet.

Why is a woman shallow for wanting to follow tradition? Her mother and the women before her got some type of engagement gift that was appropriate at the time. Diamonds are what we give and you should be happy to follow that tradition, then go and get the house and a car and a living room set.

Getting married is a leap of faith. If you get divorced you're gonna have much bigger problems that a diamond. For starters, she'll get half of your belongings and most likely your kids. Again, to each his own I guess.

If you said the most beautiful diamond you can afford, I might come close to agreeing with you. But I'm not a rapper, so I realize that bigger is not necessarily better. A diamond that is too big just looks tacky. I've walked through jewelers row in Philadelphia, and most of the stuff they have in the windows just looks ugly. Not classy at all.

Now, I don't really know what you mean by the biggest diamond you can afford. I could afford my car, and could easily afford another one of equal cost with a loan, but it would be idiotic for me to spend that kind of money on a diamond at this point in my life. Likewise, I have enough money saved for a downpayment on a decent house, and could afford to spend my life savings on a ring, but that would also be idiotic.

In the end it had nothing to do with what I could afford (I spent 3 weeks salary), but what looked best on her finger.

well, my friends and I all never grew up rich, and a car we can be proud of would be a late 90s civic, seriously. so to us, being able to save up 5k and buy a car is great, considering we used to drive '87 beaters that looks like it'll fall apart in the freeway.

well, my friends and I all never grew up rich, and a car we can be proud of would be a late 90s civic, seriously. so to us, being able to save up 5k and buy a car is great, considering we used to drive '87 beaters that looks like it'll fall apart in the freeway.

Well you're supposed to drive beaters until you get a bit older and have a real job, and can actually afford a car. Best car I drove up until 2003 when I was 25 and got a real job paying 70K a year was a Dodge Spirit 1992....

The whole concept of "a car you can be proud of" completely escapes me. People screw up their finances because they want to impress someone with a car, or a diamond?

I remember a guy we hired right out of school. He immediately bought a brand-new giant pickup truck loaded to the max. Six months later his gf dumps him and moves out, and he can't afford the truck payments plus the entire rent which they had been splitting.

He thought he could go back to the dealer and trade it towards a cheaper vehicle like it's no big deal. Dealer says he owes $4K more than it's worth on a trade in because he had no down payment and financed for 72 months (!). Ended up having it repo'd and completely screwed his credit.

I bought a broken down 1961 Cadillac hearse for 3k and invested almost 10 grand in it already and it's nowhere near done. Turning it into the Ecto-1 from Ghostbusters. I think that's pretty unnecessary =)
