If you have the money, go ahead and buy a diamond. If you need something more usefull like food, diamonds shouldn't be needed to show your love.

When looking for overall quality in a diamond, the first thing you want to look at is the cut.

Standard proposal size is around 1ct. But it all depends how much money you want to spend. If your shopping, a lot of jewelers close out stock on ebay and you can get some pretty good prices there.
