I put a diamond ring on layway at Wal-mart, and I have to decide if i wanna get it out .Its due by the 20th of September. Heres what it is: its a 1/2 Karat total weight 14KT. yellow gold diamond ring. It was originally 399.99, but was clearance priced at 199.00.I had never seen a deal this good on a ring like this, so thats why i put 20.00 down.I want this ring for an investment. to put in my safety posit box with some other jewelry. what do you think. Im broke now, so i would have to take a new Cannon A510 digital camera back to wal-mart (i got it on clearance marked down to 130.00 from 195.00) to be able to get the ring out, so i have mixed feelings.

how do the diamonds look? how many of them are there, cut, clarity, color, carat? i mean per stone, not total weight

i've never bought jewelry there, but from what i've seen, they tend to have cloudy diamonds that aren't gonna have near the value a nice stone will...

it's going to be damn near impossible to get something that would be a good investement at a retail place...i generally find my good deals on jewelry in pawn shops

Diamonds are gay, and so are women. If a rock is high on your priority list, you suck.

Tsosczb,

The word, "gay" means happy. In contemporary usage, it also refers to homosexuality. It is NOT a generalized negative adjective. Such usage only promotes homophobic stereotypes and bigotry.

We have many good, contributing members who happen to be gay. Who they are is not your business, but you may not continue to post such verbal abuse on our forums. Doing so again may be reason to suspend your posting privileges.

You should not purchase the ring.

- You should never buy jewlery from Walmart.
- You should not buy a diamond because it is on 'sale'
- If you have to put a diamond ring on layaway, you should not purchase the ring.
- If a diamond only costs $400, it will not appreciate. In fact there's a good chance it could disintigrate.
- Do you know anything about diamonds or are you just pretending like it's a good investment?
- Try the stock market instead with that $400.

Take a trip to Jewtown in NYC and get a real diamond.

QFT...I purchased my wedding band at Walmart, only because I'm cheap and I could care less. But my wife's engagement ring and band were purchased as a set from a GOOD quality jewelry store. I've seen the rings at Walmart, not worth it, and they will not appreciate in value at all. Unless of course boxes with sh1t in them appreciate in value.

Purchasing already-set diamonds is not a great investment plan. Purchasing already-set diamonds from mass market retailers is an AWFUL investment plan. Even loose diamonds as investments are a dicey proposition because they have very little intrinsic value. If the bottom falls out of the diamond market, you'd be screwed.

About the only worthwhile thing would be if you just happen to have an opportunity to buy some loose diamonds in bulk and resell them to jewelers.

I have heard decent things about Costco's jewelry. If you must buy from somewhere such as this, it could be a better shot than Walmart.

I found my wife's ring @ People's. Sure, it was already set, etc etc. But it was appraised for $1500 more than I paid, and I did my research on this sucker and got her something that she is really proud of. White gold, 0.85 kt princess-cut with "baguettes" on each side. Her wedding band was also purchased there and the two are now fused together. Very nice, she gets a ton of compliments. It really is a great-looking peice of hardware.

"I want this ring for an investment."

I am by no means a financial wizard, but I would guess that if you're in a financial position where you have to put $20 down on a $200 item to put it on layaway, that perhaps purchasing the thing is not the best idea.
