Hmm, Tech Report is reporting that Diamond has changed its mind and decided to sell the overclocked card retail:

"Update: Regarding the Radeon HD 4870 XOC Black Edition, Diamond dropped us a line to say, "Do to popular demand we are making these cards available in ecommerce in the next week." Looks like the card won't be exclusive to Smooth Creations PCs after all."

Apparently, this is the first of many 'Super RV770s' have a look at this

AMD GPG (ex-ATI) is binning the parts to a lowest denominator required for good yields and a level of performance that reaches or sometimes overtakes Nvidia?s GTX 260. But this time around, the company developed an AIB/OEM-only product codenamed "Super RV770", which will be much more powerful.

The "Super RV770" will arrive with pre-installed water-cooling and features unlocked BIOS, which enables the GPU to be pushed all the way to 950 MHz, while the memory can be pushed to 4.8 GT/s (1.2 GHz QDR). According to our sources, you may be able to push the GPU even beyond 1 GHz, if you use TEC elements, and keep the temperature of GPU low.

Is it possible that 950MHz version will end up faster than 280? I am looking forward to some reviews.

That's not too bad actually. I'd consider buying one. I want to see actual pictures first. And numbers. Pictures and numbers :D.

Are HD4850s locked in any way?...I don't think I'm up for spending $300 on a video card. With the HD4850 available for as low as $150, it doesn't feel like it makes sense.

Can somebody explain, in simple terms, what this even means? I was under the assumption that all video cards were unlocked since any random asshole can install ATI Tool and start overclocking any video card.

Because 512MB is plenty.

Seriously, I don't get all this obsession with video card RAM.

example

For today's games, even Crysis, more than 512MB is a waste.
Wrong. But also right.

You're making a huge incorrect assumption that everyone runs on little 1680x1050 displays, or even lower perhaps.

I would say that for those running 1920x1200 or lower without too much eye candy (AA), you're good with 512 MB usually.

But come play with us @ 2560x1600, or even at 1920x1200 but with high AA levels, & you'll understand very fast why 512 MB is not adequate.

To put things into a little perspective, let's assume the average 1680x1050 vs. my 2560x1600.

1764000 pixels
4096000 pixels.

By my math, that's 2.322x the pixels.

A HUGE vRAM sucking difference.

Now obviously, there are many many games than will still run extremely well on 512 MB, i agree.
I would go ahead & say basically anyone who runs 1600x1200/1680x1050 should absolutely not worry about things & get themself a 512 MB 4870/4870.

But if you want to run high levels of AA on certain newer games, or run up @ my resolution, buying a 512 MB card is not plenty, or even adequate at all in some cases.

A pixel is 24bits. 8 bits per colour of RGB.

4096000pixels x 24bits = 98304000bits

98304000bits / (8bits/byte) = 12288000bytes

12288000bytes / (1024bytes/kilobyte) / (1024kilobytes/megabyte) = 11.71875MB

So yeah.

Yes you can, 'locked' is in reference to where the CCC allows you to OC it to, in this case its 700mhz. You can OC more than what CCC provides you but you have to install 3rd party apps and neither AtiTool or Rivatuner support the new cards at this time.

Using such methods would offset all the benefit of cost/per ratio that would motivate the purchase of a 4870 in the first place.
that's pretty much only for suicide benchmark runs

I think the 4850 is only limited to 700Mhz in CCC, but when 3rd party programs supports 4xxx they will also support higher o/c.

Hmm sounds fishy. Great if it were true though. Imagine someone (such crazy things always seem to happen) softmodding the HD4870X2 with such a BIOS... :p lol

Yea, but the problem is can the card itself actually run at those speeds? I sure wouldn't risk it. Would you?

Some people will, pretty sweet to have a HD4870 watercooled, running at 1100mhz core or something like that, with 1200mhz ram. Wow, pure sweetness. Probably dualrad watercooling setup needed for GPU alone though :p And you'll need a full cover block as well :p

I thought the PCB was going to be black :(. Flaming skull? Wonder if the art designer is a Doom fan. It be perfect for a Skulltrail rig -- added a few of those in, and you'd get SkullFire .

Are you saying that 12mb VRAM is adequate for gaming on a 30" monitor? Maybe 12mb of VRAM is adequate to display a still picture on a 30" monitor, but if the video card has to use DRAM as a buffer to do its calculations during gaming, then doesn't your FPS is going to be extremely low to the point of unplayable? I fail to see what you are trying to imply with your math (other than an exercise in conversion). Because by your math, 16mb VRAM is overkill for gaming on any monitor 30" or under.

it not like the stock cooler is bad. It's the fan speed issue thats bad. My hd4870 idles at 35-43c (35c right this second) depending on the time of day and loads between 58-65c, again depending on the time of day. I have my fan speed set at 47%. Very tolerable noise although it is audible
