your link shows that the DM10 is faster than WD3200JB in most applications!!

The WD3200JB's represented by the red line,

while the DM10's the yellow line.

On that page, the WD tops the Maxtor in 5 out of 5 benchmarks.

The actual transfer rates and I/O benchmarks are more important than the interface bandwidth,

and if you look at the last sentence of the second paragraph, THG said "Western Digital clearly dominates the I/O benchmarks while Seagate is the king of transfer performance."

While the very last sentence stated "The DiamondMax 10 may be Maxtor's current desktop jewel, but it is suffering from its age."

To ye who have finally bought one of the new Hitachi T7K250's - any word on noise? It sounds like the Hitachi is only two platters vs. the previous 4-5 platters. If so, is it a bit less noisy than your previouse drive? Being a sound isolation freak, I'm particularly interested in a head-head with Seagate's 7200.7/.8 as I'm looking to get one of these as a replacement for an old 7200.7.

Seems that the hardcore review is the only one up right now...

edit - well, I might be answering my own question here.

According to Hitachi's white paper, it looks like the 7K250 is 3 platters / 3.0 bels idle, and the T7K250 is 2 platters / 2.8 bels idle.

I'm sure that doesn't mean much, but it tells me that real-world, the T7K250 should be a bit quieter than its older brother, yes?

Guess I'll wait patiently for a solid noise review....maybe silentpcreview.

i have the t7k250 and the 7k250 both in max cap. sata. the t7 is a little quieter (subjective). suffice to say that i'm normally not bothered by hard drive noise unless its a high pitched whine (like some of the older seagate scsi's)

edit for sp.

Is the performance difference between those two pretty big? I want a Raid 0 setup, and want a justified $60 difference for the pair.

Thanks.

Eventhough benchmarks would show some improvements in the newer drives,

you wouldn't be able to feel the difference between the newer and older Hitachis,

not like how you'll notice the difference between Raptor74s vs 7200 drives.

NCQ makes no difference for reqular desktop usage, and in fact sometimes NCQ could hurt

performance a little bit. It's quite helpful in server environments though.

i have three choices:
t7k250 - new WD 2500KS and WD 3200 JD
what do u think?

i omitted maxtor because of his short life, and the seagate because of his low speed and performance.
