Dialup Connector Keeps Popping Up

Does anyone have any idea how to stop my dialup connector from popping up all the time. I close it and 10 seconds later it will pop up again? I'm using Windows XP home.

It seems that if you have IE automatically dial your default connection, the dialup connector thingy will keep popping up at random times even if you're already connected.

I would suspect that you have some program installed that is set to automatically update, or an email client set to connect automatically.

Excuse me if I am wrong, but go to Control Panel\Internet Options\ Connections and tick "Never Dial a Connection"

While that will work mechBgon was asking about anti-malware because lots of malware will dial a connection by itself.

Two minor points to make---if I am not mistaken---also in the control panel under modem setting is connect automatically.---and also check to see if your modem speakers are on.
Many dialers will turn them off--and then dial some expensive 900 number---and you won't find out until you get a huge long distance bill.

And as a minor quibble with mechbgon--many of the malware types falling under the definition of dialers will often be better detected by scanners in the spyware class.
Rather than scanners in the antivirus class---which often confine themselves to just viruses--trojans---worms. And if there is a rootkit installed--those will elude detection
by conventional scanners.---so check some rootkit detectors also.

But to the OP hackmole---who wrote--Does anyone have any idea how to stop my dialup connector from popping up all the time. I close it and 10 seconds later it will pop up again? I'm using Windows XP home.

I have one question-----has it always been this way ever since you installed XP home?---or did it suddenly change without you doing anything in the control panel to reset modem settings?---if the latter is true---you better be asking yourself--if I didn't change modem settings---what did?---and if malware got in---you better be increasing your computer security.
Look at the consolidated security links in the software section or find John's links.

If you look at http://www.av-comparatives.org > Comparatives > 11. On-demand comparative, near the top of the table they mention how the antivirus software did against a collection of over 200000 dialers. True, some antiviruses don't have dialer detection. But of those that do, it looks like many have a rating of "excellent." That means >95% detection rate. So I'd be curious to see what the OP is using, if anything.

Unfortunately, not everyone has access to this technology.

edit: plus I've even seen this happen to people on DSL.
