i recently acquired a laptop, and would like to be able to access the internet when i am away from home. we have cable internet provided by mchsi.com, and i have a nice home lan set up.

i also have a spare box, modem, phone line, and copy of win2k server laying around.

i want to know how i can set a box to allow dial-in connections so i can access the internet and my network shares via my home LAN rather then paying another 20 bucks a month for a dial-up ISP.

1. is this possible?
2. if so, how?

i would like details please, or maybe a website where i can find out how?

i have 5 boxes on a TCP/IP lan at home, all running win2k pro. internet is routed via a Netgear RT314 cable/dsl gateway router.

any help you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated!

Interesting concept. I never did it since I have a Dialup account.

In principle you have to install a Modem on one computer, and use a Dialup Remote program (There is a lot of them, many shareware to try, search for the term Remote in major Download sites) I use pcAnywhere,

You leave the computer with the modem on, and the remote program running in client mode.

When you dial the number of the line that the modem is connected to, your Laptop can take control of the computer at home.

Will it let you access the Internet connection??? I never tried.

don tuse pcanywhere, just configure rras for remote dialin support... note that you wont go over 33.6k connections without a special modem..... actually v.92 modems maybe will get you like 48k but I haven't tried them.

rras is the key, you can dial in and get an ip on you home lan and access everything you need to from there. I would suggest also setting up a vpn on the win2k server so that if you go somewhere with your lappy with a network connection you can connect via the vpn instead of a slow dialup.

I'm sorry, but I must disagree with Jack here. Do not use PCanywhere or other programs like that. You can set up a dial-in account very easily with the new connection wizard in the network connections folder, or you can go with the RRAS (routing and remote access) method, which has a higher learning curve, but better security and probably better stability also. For remotely administering your server, Windows 2000 Server has Terminal services, which should be installed in the remote administration mode, not the application server mode. Once you dial in, your laptop will become part of your home LAN, and (assuming your Windows 2000 Server is set up to route your cable connection, and has RRAS set up for routing or is using ICS) you will also be able to browse the internet in addition to printing, sharing files, and connecting to terminal services on your server.
