I was thinking of going away. So I was hoping to bring a modem to ensure my computer has internet access. I call my ISP and they said that the dial up is free. But the only trouble is that how do I know the number that I dial is free?

You log to their web site and you look for connections numbers in the places that you go to.

They usually have lists by ZIp code, and or, Area code, and or, State and Town.

It all depends on your service provider, some have a lot of COs distributed throughout the region they service, and thus a lot of local numbers, while others only have a few. Check the list to see if any of the numbers on the list are local (hence free), calls from your destination.

To Laughfingman12,

Your isp will accept your sign in from anywhere---but only if you have a local access number will you be able to dial in without incurring a long distance fee from your phone provider.
Or her phone provider if you use her phone lines---and even at five cents/minute long distance---then internet access will cost $3.00/hr.---and since it will go on HER bill---its not a way to be popular with her---so you may need to get a month or so of service from a national isp like AOL---Fry's---earthlink---or net zero---and make damn sure their local access number for her phone number is charge free.

The other way is to go to the isp's web site---and type in the city and state of her house---and see what local access numbers you get---and then you can make sure they are toll free from her house---by calling her phone provider and asking if this is indeed toll free from her telephone number.
