Dial-up connection stalling

NeoPTLD

I'm getting a sudden random stalling on my dial-up connection. The connection remains active and there's no line drop, but suddenly incoming packets stops coming in and status indicator shows no change in received bytes. The outgoing packet will go out every so often until my modem eventually realizes downstream traffic had been lost and hangs up.

There's no pattern. It goes fine for weeks sometimes when it's good, but when it's bad like today it will happen every 15 minutes or so. The problem goes away when I reconnect. Anyone know what's going on?

My suggestion: GET BROADBAND!

Go goof off in Off Topic if you have nothing useful to say.

Exactly -- Some of us don't even have a broadband option where we live...

Back to your question NeoPTLD

There are a couple of things. LiLithTecH is right for one of them..> Is your computer clean? Housecall if you don't have a good up-to-date AV.

Second, has it ever worked well? If so, what has changed (new modem, another phone in the system, answering machine, added caller ID,...)? I battle the same thing here, too - but it's due to rural telephone lines and static. Nothing much I can do about it except keep trying different modems. Some are more tolerant of static/noise than others are.

Try using a different ISP (such as worldnet.att.net, or netzero.com) which has a free 30-day trial period. That way, you can narrow down whether the problem is on your end, or on the ISP's end. Some modem makers offer firmware updates, so check for that also.

You didn't mention the OS but there is a hot fix for XP.

The MS KB Article number is 332176

Call 425-635-3311 and they will email you an address at which to download the file.

I have similar problems. Mine are not at my end. First of all, my copper to bellsouth switching starion (less then 3/4 mile) is bad. They know but won't replace it. Secondly it is a well know fact that here the isp is over subscribed and they can get away with it. My connection just stops at busier times. It's pretty good almost always at 5AM. And last of all sometimes when I dial up it is really slow. So I redial until I get a faster connection. Apparently it's possible to connect to a bank of older routers etc, or less capable equipment at the isp and you must reconnect to get a better connection. Sometimes I do this 4 times within 2 minutes and I get a decent connection. I realize that these are not my problems but there is nothing I can do about it. Bellsouth knows it can get away with it. DSL at work has spoiled me so it's even worse when this happens. I refuse to pay for dsl at home for what little I use it here.
Hope yours is just a bug on your end.
