Dial Up connection speed

I have a ModemBlaster PCI Flash56 DI5630-4 modem. It used to connect as high as 53,333. Now it connects at 48,000. All the time. I've tried dialing into to different number and a different ISP. I checked all the phone wires. (Modem is less than 10 wire feet from Verizon installed box inside the house) I even check the wire going to the box outside. Another PC in the house with a really el-cheapo modem connects faster. What could have changed (software-wise) to cause this? This started about 3 weeks ago. The only thing I know I ran/installed that might have affected this is the Windows XP Upgrade advisor (it seems to have started around this the time I ran the tool.) I've checked the "Only connect at this speed" box and it's set to 57,600.

Anyone else experience something similiar. (I should have cable modem is about 2 months, at least according to Comcast...)

This is actually pretty typical. I did ISP support for about a year and a half and got alot of these calls. Basically, some modems sync up better with the modems on your ISP's end. Are both this modem and your last using the same standard (v.90 or v.92)? For the most part, there really isn't much you can do about this, I'm sorry to say. If you're really worried about it, you can call your ISP and ask which modems get the best connection rates, or you can get the same brand modem you had before.

Also, you can force your modem to connect at higher speeds. You may want to run a search on groups.google.com for "new modem connect speed slower old" without the quotes. There are a few threads on it. Some recommend changing the init string on your modem

Yes, but I haven't changed the modem nor has the ISP changed anything. It has to be software or config on my PC. Again it started after the Win XP upgrade advisor ras run. (My PC only had a few issues; scanner driver, digital camera twain driver, MODEM and naturally Disk Detector (SB Live!) and MS's System Information in Control Panel)

But since running the d*mn upgrade advisor, my modem tops out at 48,000. I looked for issues on the MS site but missed any (if there are any!)

If the telco backbone changed, why would my other PC connect as well as it always did? (49,333 and up) I only have to suffer a few more months until they bring in/turn on the cable modem service (They already have the digital cable service, they are waiting on equipment at their office for the broadband cable modem access) It's just driving me nuts. I've also tried the latest driver updates for my modem (see post at top) but no joy.

I just read on one of the forums that WinXP reserves some of your bandwidth for itself ( or was it resources??--damn, I can't remember now :( ), I'd look into this. It is possible to disable this part of WinXP, but is a pain. From what you're telling us, it sounds like your os is the culprit.

You connect at 48,000? Consider yourself lucky. I only ever connect at 26.4 kbs with my 56k v.92 modem...

My new Dell lappy (actually my employer's) connects at 52,000 on the same line. The lappy runs XP my problem PC runs Win98SE. I'll suffer with it until cable modem is active. Just a prob I would like to solve. It's odd...
