Dial in server ?????

Ok, this is the scenario.

I have an NT 4 domain. 4 older v.90 modems attatched to a BDC (old PII266) via a digi 8 port 8sem module.

My users (does not matter type of laptop, modem, etc) can only connect at a max of 21kb or so (modems are us robotics 56 fax modems)

VPN thru my WAN is NOT an option. So my question is, do u guys reco upgrading the bdc to a faster computer and Upgrading the digi 8port module(uses an ISA card as the interface) and the modems to striclty 56k v.92 data modems?

I know 56k connection will be impossible with the analog phone lines, but I am getting much flack for the low speeds (14k-21k) when they dial in.

How are your lines to the server? I'd first check them out and be sure I felt they were fine. How far away are your users when they dial in?

How can I test the phone lines for data thruput? Depends, sometimes they are across the counrty, sometimes they are within same state.

The server itself should be fine for only 4 connections, unless it's doing a lot of other work.

What I would probably try, after checking the lines, would be a 4port dedicated modem card.

It will upgrade all of your modems, and could possibly reduce a lot of cable clutter as well.

With speeds that low though, I'd definately be trying out the lines.

Maybe use a laptop or another desktop and try each of the lines with a local and then long distance ISP and try to determine a pattern, if not a single or a couple straight up bad lines.

AFAIK, 56k modems are limited to 28.8k when connecting modem-to-modem (such as your setup). The modem banks at dial-up ISPs are capable of 56k connections (given decent line connections). You'd need something similar to that in order for the users to connect much faster than they're already connecting.



Actually... doing a small bit of googling after posting.... looks like the max upload speed for v.92 is 48kbps..... so given ideal line conditions, you should be able to get around that speed, assuming the user is also using a v.92 modem....

Unless somethings changed its 33.6 over a standard analog phone line. The trick isn't really the modems at the isp, its the cas t1 or pri feeding them. If they're across the country I wouldn't bank on making a full speed connection. Poor line conditions where they're connecting from can also be a cause. Are the lines that you have running in from the nid to the server in good shape? Old wiring, damaged, etc?

yep, at best you're gonna get 33.6. In reality 28.8 would be good.

This is only for analog modem to analog modem.

If you're not getting 28.8 then start looking at the lines.

I will swap the phone cables going from the wall to modems today. How can I check the actual lines? Even when I dial in from a phoneline in the buidling the speeds suck!
