I think checking with an SPL meter should be your next step.

I'll have to get a new one. I just put fresh batteries in mine and it won't turn on.

well if you're trowing the termal protection, you're playing it too loud.

Also, check and double check all your wiring to make sure there are no stray strands touching each other.

The 3805 is a decent receiver, but it isn't a power amp.

He has an amp. It's listed in the specs above but I don't really know anything about that amp...or amps in general. I just use my HT receiver to power my system.

Have you tried it without the amp?

Right now, the amp isn't hooked up. I am afraid to blow the speaker(s) again. It took 2 months to get the other one back.

The thermal overload tripped on the Denon without the amp running. I was pushing it pretty hard.

You don't understand it because it doesn't make sense :)

Either the speakers were rated with over optimism or the amplifier/s were allowed a gain level beyond it's current limitations. Seems like former in the first case and latter with the second. Which is not necessarily a bad thing for undergained input, but the amplifier should have a gain display. That's if the problem wasn't caused by a short, which is possible.

Of course the best thing is to be sensible and identify harmonic or clipping distortion, which would have certainly been present before anything became damaged. It probably sounded like ****** before it died but you didn't take consideration.

His problem is not lack of power, but lack of cone area. Notice how he blew everything but the subs in the speakers. Get speakers with bigger+more mids, and with higher power handling, and you should be good.
