Diagnose and Possible Repair: $$?

Hi. I have a local business owner that has asked if I would look at his three work computers and tell him why they are doing this and that and then what the solution is and what it will take. He insists on paying me, so what is a fair rate per hour when troubleshooting and fixing? I think the initial eval is going to be free, but if he tells me to fix them, I need a number and I have no clue. 🙂

Please tell me what a fair hourly rate is in general. Software only fix, open box replace motherboard, differ obviously, which is why I'm looking for an average fair hourly rate.

I appreciate your input!

Such things will vary by location. I see you are in Utah - so, I would go to a local shop and ask what they charge.

As an example, this shop is a good one here in Tucson. You can see what they charge under Services by type.

Coincidentally, I'm in Utah and I charge $50/hour for 'house calls' for basic service, plus the cost of any parts that are needed.

I'll sometimes offer a flat rate if I know exactly what needs to be done and how long it will take but that's usually only for repeat customers where I know their situation and have a good idea what to expect when I get there.

Decide how many problems exist to be corrected, prioritize them from the severest to least severe and approach it from that angle. $50/hour is about right.
