So I'm at the end of Act II, and I'm in Tal Rasha's tomb. I was fighting the big lizard thing after putting the staff in the orifice, and I was trying to use my health potions which are assigned to 1 2 3 and 4, but whenever I hit any of the numbers, it healed my mercenary instead of me. I'm still using Azril, the one I got in the first act, and she's an archer so she wasn't getting hurt. The thing kept chasing my around and I couldn't stop to use my inventory so I died.

Anyone know why the health potions were only healing her?

Hmmm, from what I can remember (I haven't played in a long while) the default key combination to heal a mercenary is Shift+1 or 2 or 3 or 4. If you check under the Controls Configuration options, under the Function column, scroll down and you'll see "Use Belt", four of them, and you can re-assign keys there, have you tried to do that? I'd presume you did but I'm just saying, just to make sure.

Also if you happen to play on USEast Ladder I will be able to help you with your quests and so on. If you play off-line then I highly suggest you to find a bow with poison damage for your archer mercenary, but Act I mercenaries are already showing their weaknesses in Nightmare difficulty, which from there you're better with Act II mercs (Offensive or Defensive ones).

I think you just solved my problem indirectly. I like to hold down shift to make my character run, it just made it easier in the beginning because I am used to first person shooters. It was probably because I was running away from the guy while trying to heal myself.

Thanks.

In the first few levelups you run out of stamina pretty frequently, but if you put a few points in stamina by the time your level 15+ you really dont need to worry about it anymore, and can leave autorun on forever and ever.

I guess I'll try that if I ever decide to keep playing the game. I'm not really into it Maybe it's my character, I don't know. I'm a barbarian if that makes a difference.

He means putting points in Vitality, because there's no such thing as putting points "into Stamina", but adding to Vitality always gives some Stamina. And don't forget Stamina Potions, they're actually necessary (in my opinion, just because I hate running out of it) especially when you start up and up to Act III or IV, or when you reach around Level 20, then you usually have enough not to worry about it.

There is absolutely no reason to walk in D2. Ever. I never used stamina potions after a few levels; you can just run across the map.

I'm at level 21 or 22 I think. I haven't finished Act II yet, and don't know if I will. I've never used a stamina potion, I just walked for a few seconds to let my stamina regenerate.

In PvM walking ensures that your defense is being taken into consideration, running completely nulls it, it's standing still and walking that lets it be useful, but other than that walking serves no purpose.

By the way coldmeat, are you playing off-line or on-line?

her? so i suppose you still have an act 1 merc? get an act 2 merc fast, since you're still in normal, get a defensive.

Ah ok, you're going to experience the challenge of it then, I remember having lots of fun with it off-line back then, it's always harder to find every single items yourself, but it's so much more rewarding in the end.

By the way Normal Act I mercenaries are fine until Act IV, and can do it in Act V with some good gear, but believe me, in Nightmare as soon as you reach Act II get yourself a merc there and be sure to take either a defensive one for his Holy Freeze aura or an offensive one for the Might aura, but since Might only increases the physical damage for your party (not yourself) then I'd go with defense in your case unless you plan on getting lots of summons with you (mostly for summoning Druids and Necromancers).
