Well, I hope its infinitely better than D1, D2, and Torchlight. If its not then its going to be a big let down. That trading program they are working on has to be really good too or there will be a an uproar about it although I'm not concerned with it since I'll probably not take advantage of it.

Did anybody else cringe a little when they read "It appears distinctly possible that Diablo could be the first Blizzard franchise to make the leap from PCs to consoles"

No, and you (and all other PC elitists) seriously need to get over your console phobia.

Blizzard will not release a sub-par game. Period. Given that, who cares if they release a verson of Diablo III on the iPhone? It wouldn't detract from the awesomeness that is the PC version!

I have good faith in Blizzard. But you can't completely scoff at this "phobia". Quite often games that go from console to PC are completely terrible. The priority of troubleshooting bugs can go to the consoles leaving the PC game unplayable.

Again, I really really don't see Blizzard doing this since PC is their bread and butter and they have a good track record. But "console phobia" as you call it has f'd over many a game for the PC.

It's not elitist to want equal effort in a PC version, nor elitist to hope that PC gameplay doesn't take a hit because certain concepts aren't compatible with console mechanics.

Diablo's gameplay is a little too fast paced, precise, and extensive to work on a console. It would be impossible to teleport to a specific location, for example, with a controller.

Diablo on the Playstation while not as brilliant as on the PC was exceptionally good as a Console game.

I wonder if that Kinect thingy (ASUS make one right?) will be usable for the PC version of D3 though, should make it even more interesting.

I'm still suspicious that the financial boffins at Blizzard are somewhat understandably reticent about releasing a title that would almost certainly result in hundreds of thousands or probably millions of players leaving their monthly cash-cow, WoW.

Why would they leave WoW? Those who love the Online MMO type of games have no reason to leave WoW. People can and do play more than one game at a time and if blizzard can get them to make sure they are both Blizzard products then its just more money in its coffers. I seriously don't see WoW being threatened by D3.

Haha how could you say this? People can and do play more than one game at a time.

Correct.

People also can and do stop paying their monthly fee when something else comes along that they are more interested in. You have many many layers of WoW players, not all of them are going to keep paying no matter what.

I'm not here to say that whatever % of people stop their monthly subscription from WoW because of D3 is "threatening", but I'm sure that number is more than 0. I would bet a very hefty amount of WoW players were at one point in time avid D2 players. You can't just stamp all WoW players as not having enough interest in D3 to make it their new full time commitment.

WoW is a worthless game to me - there is no objective end goal. I never bothered to even play a trial of it.

Diablo 2 was very different. You had ladder sessions (race to the top), Hardcore (survive), leveling to 99, gaining and outfitting your character to ideals, trying out different builds.

Either way, it ends. You achieve your goal and it ends. You then play with that character in PVP or use him or her for runs, or getting items, or helping others. You don't have to devote hours to the game with no end goal in sight.

Well, it looks like Blizzard has removed item binding from D3. That should be great news for D2 fans. I always thought WoW/MMO style bind on equip had no place in Diablo.

I agree. I didn't realize this was under consideration/discussion.

Is there a way to hear details from Blizzard's quarterly call live (today at 4:30pm Eastern)? If not, where should I look for a recap afterwards?

I'm so excited for this game.

I am going to try to get my SO hooked too. I pray that it works...

The 3rd quarter reference in the earning's call today was a calendar quarter, meaning that we're aiming to launch the Diablo III beta between July 1st and September 30th. Keep in mind that it's our current goal, and of course that can change as development continues.

A quote from Bashiok (Blizz community rep on the D3 forums) today. Its been said before that launch date is scheduled roughly 6 months after the start of beta, but that may be inaccurate. All things considered, end of 2011 or early 2012 looks good for release.

Sadly, this all but kills the hope of a 2011 release. Even if the beta started as early as 7/1/11, and even if they only needed six months from that point before full release, that still pushes Diablo 3 to 1/1/12.

My only hope is, at that point, they don't do something stupid like wait for a June release for bigger sales figures. Blizzard, if you're reading this: the game will sell whenever you release it - don't delay it for the sake of delaying it!
