Diablo 2 skipping

Ok here is the situtation. Just bought Diablo 2 and installed the multiplayer version of installation. The game in single player skips every few seconds and the hard drive is busy whenever this happens. I am running Win2k on Atlon 500 @ 700 128mb ram, Creative TnT2 Ultra, SB Live x-gamer, and 10 gigs Western Digital.

I already defragged. Anything else could be wrong? Is this because I am running under win2k?
 
I am having a similar problem. I have a via mobo (Tyan Trinity 400) and am running win 98. does anyoone know how to fix this?
 
So is anyone with the win2k and via chipset motherboard is screw? That sucks. I installed WinME and it runs smooth.
