Diablo 2 making my system unstable...

after i run Diablo 2, my system becomes very unstable and locks up soon after while i'm doing relatively minor tasks such as browsing the web or playing mp3s. it's a blue screen lockup which says something about ntoskrnl or something to that effect. does anyone know what could be causing this? i'm running nvidia detonator 5.22 drivers, everything else revelent listed below. any help is appreciated, as it's getting tiring having to restart my formerly stable system everytime i play this game.

Check Blizzard for patches.

I know that even before Diablo II was roled out, Blizzard was releasing a couple of patches.

It is making my LIFE unstable..
constantly wanting unique weapons.... better armour.... the best rings...

its a documented error that has only one fix to my knowledge.

Upgrade to the BETA nvidia 5.30 drivers.

I had the same problem but after the upgrade.. No BSODS and I haev been playing for too long.

They have a memory leak or three - the fixed the worst of them in one of the patches, but still the leak exists and that's probably what's causing your problem.

Blizzard didn't do their (normally wonderful) job in checking bugs in D2. It's got issues with DHCP, memory leaks, driver issues, plus a slew of other minor issues. This doesn't even go into the problems that a B.Net player gets into due to the server network being woefully inadequate.

I like the game, and I prefer that it's out and I can play it over fine tuning every last bug out of it, but I wish I could have my "cake and it eat it too" by having the game ASAP while it having it bugless. Since this isn't physically possible, I'll take a few bugs.

When you reboot, hold down shift at the before hitting ok and it will only reboot windows (rather than the system). This should fix the problem and not require as much time.

thanks guys. i'll try upgrading my video drivers, and if that doesn't work i'll just stick to restarting.

Unfortunately Kjaz you have the worst possible combination for Diablo2: Nvidia video card, SB Live and win2k, like I do. EAX and direct3D don't work at all for me. There was a warning on the website and in the game box that you have to upgrade to the latest drivers if you have an SBlive and Nvidia card. I tried 5.32 but the game ran like absolute crap, pausing for 5-10 seconds sometimes in underground sections while it tried to catch up during battles. I downgraded to 5.30, and the performance is pretty decent now. Once again, it is Nvidia with compatability problems. Can't these guys hire some decent driver developers?

nvidia has excellent driver support, they release a plethora of drivers to the public, although leaked they are still there for you to use =)

the problem with diablo 2 tho, i belive has to do equally with both video card drivers and the game itself. good game, but it dident hold my interest untill i beat diablo. i just got too bored of the monotonous hacking up demons... even tho there were still hopes of getting better loot, it just dident give me enough enjoyment to keep playing. good thing i downloaded it and dident buy it, only played it for 1 & 1\2 weeks =\

deus ex on the other hand, oh yeah! i guess u could call it a system shock 2 clone, but system shock 2 got too hard for me and caused me to give up and loose interest. i just beat deus ex, and it was definately worth the download! multiple endings too, gotta go do the other 2 tommorow and then back to TFC clans =\. mmm, excellent gaming goodness =)
probably would concider buying it if it had good multiplayer, but i dont think there is any (i should go check now, i cant remember if there is multi or not, but i doubt it)

Nevermind Kjaz. Those drivers won't fix your problem. I had just gotten out of Diablo2 and answered your message, a couple minutes later I got a blue screen for the first time like you do.

true, but the plethora of drivers come with fixes and features. i would say they sometimes lack quality but the quantity makes up for some of the ones with bugs. ie: if you find one that dosent work, you can try another.. gives u a chance to find which driver suits you the best.
