DHCP/Subnet problem...

hi guys,

a weird problem i am having on one of my machines here is that out of five machines connected to a WinNT Server box, all connect and logon into the domain just fine except for one machine.

whenever the password is entered in for that user, Windows 98 gives the error message that it cannot find a DHCP Server in order to validate the password with. So, I end up hitting "CANCEL" to get myself into the desktop. Once there, I do get an ip and can use the internet and surf with it just fine. However, I cannot browse any of the network drives as I am not connected/logged into the network.

As I was doing some searching and stuff, I noticed that my Subnet Mask is at 255.0.0.0 when it should be at 255.255.255.0 as all the others computers here are. I thus proceeded to statically assign the ip and subnet mask of 192.168.1.120 / 255.255.255.0 and then reboot.

Once my machine has restarted, it is able to login just fine after I enter in the password, and it seems that all is fine and well. However, the problem I know run into is that the DNS doesnt work in that if I browse to a webpage such as "www.google.com" it cannot load it up and convert the name into its ip. If i enter in the browser the ip of 216.239.51.100 then it has no problem loading up the google website. The same goes for pinging ip's and domain name sites. If I use an ip address, it has no problem while it does when putting in qualified site names.

My question now is if there is something I am missing here? I wish I could get this to either route the Net w/o any DNS problems while at 255.255.255.0 when the ip is set statically, or even better, find out why I am being set to 255.0.0.0 when in DHCP mode.

For your info, there are five machines connected to a hub, which also has a DSL router taking care of the DHCP and doing NAT as well, with the WinNT 4.0 Server connected to the hub as well.

thanks again for all your time and help in advance...

i've found that w/ win98 machines it's best to use static address vs dynamic. which you also discovered.

the second step would be to give it DNS info. is your win2k server currently the dns for your subnet?

here's how i set up on my network.

i have router to win2k server.

clients are set up w/ win2k server as DNS and router as Gateway.

hope this helps.
