dhcp questions.

hi all, i am on an NT4.0 server that has both Win98 and Win2k (and XP) machines. my question is: why wont dhcp issue an ip addy to the Win2k machines ? it works fine for the Win98 boxes. the only way i can get the 2k boxes on the network is to give them a static (lan) address. i am new to networking so any pointers are very welcome. thanks all.😕
 
You may want to try to uninstall the NICS from a win2k box and reinstall them.

Also check the MS knowledge base...there could be an issue with NT4 serving IP;s for win2k...though somwhpow i doubt that. Does the server have the latest SP's?
 
you know, i looked at that. shouldnt they be listed with the system info? because when i looked to see which (if any) were installed and it doesnt have SP anything there.
 
To find your service pack, double-click on My Computer and bring up the file system browser. Choose Help, then About Windows.

Just so there isn't any misled troubleshooting.

I have a NT4.0 machine which serves DHCP to win 2000 machines just fine.

What you can do is download Protocol Inspector from www.flukenetworks.com for a free trial and see what is happening durning the conversation. Run a trace and see. If you have a problem reading the trace you can email it to if you want and I can take a look at it.

This would be the best way to see what is going on.
 
Just an outside chance here, but are the 2k clients and the DHCP server on the same subnet? If they aren't you may need a Proxy
Also, can you ping the DHCP servers from the 2k boxes when you configure them statically?
