dhcp issues

i have a dell latitude laptop running win 2000
it is configured to generate its own ip address when connected to the local lan
all the cords were set, yet it generated a false ip (169.*/**** instead of 138)
so i checked everything and it was all in properly, wrong ip, wrong gateway, no dns etc

so i had to reformat anyway, so i reformatted and reinstalled win 2000
same problem on first boot
eventually got tired and went to bed
when i got up and took the pc off suspend mode, low and behold it had connected properly to the net

i have since found that suspend mode is the only way to get a connection

if i reboot, it doesn't connect
ipconfig /renew -> nothing
but if i reboot, immediately suspend and come out of suspension --> connection

any ideas on what i think is weird behaviour?

Since you reloaded Windows, I'd suggest you look at either the hardware or BIOS configuration. One thing that springs to mind is the option to power down the NIC.

Do I assume you mean use DHCP to get the address (Versus static)?

sounds like the nic might be the problem too, got good drivers for it?
