MODS: I also posted this in the MB forum...wasn't sure where to put this, but General HW seems much more trafficked than MB....

Hey all, I'm trying to build a very basic machine based on an LGA775 chip and DDR2 ram. The machine will be used for 0 gaming, and for the short term will be a windows server 2008 test bed....later on it may become a file server with many hard drives (as many as 15-16 i would think).

The big thing is, I'm trying to do this on a major budget.

A few quick goals: I'd like to have 4 banks for memory as I may be loading it up with some virtual machines.

Onboard video would be nice.
Cheap cheap cheap.

For a processor, the Celeron e3300 seems like a good bet...cheap, decent speed, dual core chip.

I like the DG965WH board a lot, theres one on the FS/FT forums right now. lots of PCI-e slots available, so the long term seems supported. This board seems perfect for me, but one catch: The intel website doesn't show the e3300 as a supported CPU.

Anyone think that this combo might work? Looking for some advice.

Thanks!

EDIT: Just fyi: I don't NEED to go LGA775...but the e3300 seems like a good chip for what I need. I do have 2x1gb DDR2 laying around, as well as a case, psu (but not one big enough for a decent video card...not that Id need it), and hard drive.

I'm really looking to spend like 60-80 bucks tops, less the better.

The 965 chipset wasn't originally designed for 45 nm processors like the E3300. Unless Intel is showing compatibility with other 45 nm processors, then, no, the motherboard probably doesn't support it.

Offhand, it looks like the only 65 nm processor that Newegg.com sells now is this one:

You can surely find other used 65 nm processors on ebay or other trading sites. Generally, you'd be looking for Conroe or Allendale processors.

Whatcha thinkin Rebate...you think itd be cheaper/more efficient to go with a newer MB and a 45nm chip or go with a MB like the one I linked and maybe an older proc?

e6300 for example is going to have hardware virtualization support as well as 64bit obviously, so it should work....

the CPU compatibility list for your motherboard does not include any 45nm processors. The best you can do is a pentium dual core (1MB cache, 800 FSB). There are still some old 65nm Pentium dual core (e2180, e2200, etc) that you can find with google, but they are $70 and up from what I can see. I would try getting something used.

here you can see they have refurbed E2140 for $54, or brand new for $59.

If you are ONLY using this for a home server then it's fine. If you are going to do any multimedia or productivity I would probably spend the extra $10 to get one a touch faster.

I've never dealt with compuvest personally, but when you are looking for a product that hasn't been in production for 3 years, you have limited options. They have a good rating, if you trust google's vendor rating system.

Yeah, I'd probably be looking at used, especially considering my budget.

Right now if I go with that board looks like I'll be going with an e6300....Anyone want to chime in as to how much VT support matters when dealing with VMWare/Hyper V? Pretty sure its recommended, which is why I was staying away from the pentium 2xxx chips.

you want VT. how much are you paying for the E6300? And be advised that there is a 65nm E6300 and a 45nm E6300 and only the 65nm model will work for you.

Haven't picked one out yet, so I was just saying that it looks like an e6300 would be my best bet.

And yeah, the 65nm is the one I would be looking at. I sold one to a buddy a while ago, I wonder if i could convince him to upgrade....

EDIT: However, due to some other issues with my current financial situation, I may hold off on getting a desktop for it...yeah, its only going to be 100-150 bucks, but still.

I do have my laptop lying around that I dont use much, which might be perfect for this use. Its a Sony SZ650 with the T7500 chip in it, which does everything I want to. I've upgraded it to 4gb of memory...yeah the 160gb HDD is a bit small, but itll do. Not to mention I can now mess with things on the go, and when I'm home I can just leave it plugged into ethernet and interface it with my other desktops.

So yeah, I think thats the plan for now...time to install server 08 tonight!

The 65nm E6300 runs VT. It also a very good OverClocker CPU.

I have one running on an old IP-35-E Mobo, works very well @2.4GHz (Originally 1.86GHz).

BLEH, well, that idea went out the window. I can use my laptop with Server 08 obviously, but it looks like Sony has VT disabled in the BIOS....looks like them, gateway, and Lenovo have been disabling VT....

Looks like some have been able to get it running, but it involves hacking the BIOS....sounds kinda risky to me.... blehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....

Okay, maybe I'll keep hunting for a machine...

Hmmmmm found an updated bios with VT enabled that from a forum member has been tested on my exact laptop and working great...

Tried to flash and the flasher said it failed, didn't have privileges...I'm thinking it might have to do with being Server 2008 and some safeguards in that. Time to install win7, flash, then reinstall Server 08!
