Do I need the DFIMB dat file that has shown up in my root directory? I do indeed have a DFI mobo, but I don't know if I can safely delete the file itself. Thanks in advance.

Why do you want to delete it? Just leave it there.

You can safely delete that, it's only a text based file with 8 characters most likely anyways... I'm not quite sure what it does or when it appears.

Yet, you've advised that it can be deleted? The OP still hasn't mentioned why it needs to be deleted either.

Because I don't like mysterious or seemingly unnecessary DAT files that appear for no known reason in my root directory. Then, if there is not cause for them and they are just the byproduct of some other program or service, then I would prefer them deleted. Contribute this to an anally retentive desire to keep my computer "clean" of digital refuse.

It's only 8 characters, possibly a password or hash of some sort, I can't think of any purpose for it...

Well I deleted it to no ill effect, and it hasn't reappeared. Odd, but again, thanks for the input everyone.

Okay, I have CONFIRMED what it is.

When you insert the DFI CD that came with your motherboard, it generates this file which shows your current BIOS number.

Deleting it has absolutely no negative impact, neither does keeping it.
