my sata 750gb western digital just cant be formatted. i intend to use it as a storage disk. my system disk is a 150gb raptor that works just fine. the 750gb however just fails to format in windows or in dos. vista installer indicated that the bios disk controller but not be activated for it. winxp installer failed the format halfway.

western digital tool can successfully complete the format process but a check in system tools showed that the file system was unknown (should be NTFS like my system disk).

the 750gb shows up on My Computer but clicking it takes forever to load. CPU process remains at 0% but the entire system slows to a crawl waiting for the disk.

Hi, 32103940. Welcome to the forum.

It sounds like your HDD is at fault. I assume you have both the power and data cables connected firmly? Loose cables tend to cause issues like that. Apparently your OS can recognize the HDD and begin the formatting process, so it doesn't look like the board or OS. Did the 750GB disk work on a different system previously?

its brand new..

it worked for awhile but everytime my system lost power abruptly (hard reset, freeze due to OC), when i rebooted to windows the OS just detected the hard disk as unformatted. after many resets and many quick formats later the hdd finally refused to format.

system is new too.

What version of Windows are you running? If XP, and it's not SP2, you'll need to update to allow the system to access a drive larger than 137 GB.

the 750 can be formatted and used on another pc of mine. i transferred 5gb worth of data onto it.then i took the disk and put it back into my new system, and tried transferring those 5gb of data over to my system disk. worked for maybe 1gb then the copy failed because of a crc error. before long explorer started to slow down and finally a dialog popped up to tell me the 'disk is unformatted, would you like to format it?' back to the beginning all over again.

my OS is winxp with sp2 integrated. it can detect the disk as a 750gb device.

Which SATA connector are you using for the connection? The ones from Intel or JMicron, they are colored coded if I remember correctly, I'm not home right now to look at mine.
