Well I don't see how the memory matters but it's dual channell OCZ platinum EL

The board I already metioned in the thread title as a DFI Ultra-D board

use 2 and 4 (oranges) to start. if you have problems dual channel use just slot 2 (orange closest the edge of the board) to get started.

and for the love of God check which bios you have, you'll probably need a flash, and run memtest before installing the OS.

i missed out on the cookie opportunity because i KNEW it was orange

but why run memtest before OS install, and why flash bios so early? im getting the SLI-DR (non-UT)

the shipping bios are 3.10 if you're lucky, 1.25 if you're not. the newer bios are much more forgiving. well, the 1.25 were written before the venice/sandy/x2s even came out so you can see the problem there.

also, on any new rig its wise to run memtest before install. saves alot of headache (corrupted/failed installs) if you have bad ram or some incompatability. plus the dfi has memtest right in the bios, just enable it and go.

best thing is to flash the bios, load optimized defaults, enable memtest and run a full pass at least, then do your install on all default settings.

1 - make sure you plug all 4 power connectors into the mobo.
2 - use the orange mem slots
3 - upgrade your bios 623-3
4 - select opt. defaults & apply
5 - set whatever changes you want in the bios & save
6 - get & use NF4 chipset 6.53

7 - make sure you have a native 24pin psu...

Now your ready to install XP w/ sp2 already slipstreamed...

Regards,
Jose

OH YEAH forgot to ask this on the back of my SLI-DR box it says "works with AMD athlon 64 CPUs"... and then there is like this strip of white-out right after it! surely they arent that lazy as to put the white out on instead of just flashing the BIOS, right?

EDIT as in, I have an X2, and surely they did not white-out X2 support?

can I use USB to flash the bios without an OS installed? i have another computer. normally i would just install the OS and flash the bios later, but the processor not getting IDd is a pretty big issue...

please respond as i build in about 2hrs

I used slot 2 and 4 to get it to work in dual channel, 1 and 3 didnt work.

i mean honestly it would be easier to just flash it instead of discovering what bios it is and changing the box

unless its a refurb in a new box

wow that would suck

i hate it when newegg pulls crap like that

hopefully its nothing, but while im talking about it, would it not be better to get the BIOS off their official site?

id rather not flash the BIOS quite yet though, would it be easier to do it from windows? because as long as it supports dual core, ill go ahead and install XP, but if not, i really dont want to be returning a board and waiting for a new one all over again beause of this.

i guess what i should ask is is it necessary to flash teh bios if you have old bios to get it to WORK on this hardware?

because if its old bios and it will WORK then ill install XP and then install the windows flash utility so its easier then reformat again

sounds roundabout i know but if its anywhere as near as easy as flashing my MSI board in windows its worth it

???

you won't get windows installed with an x2 on the shipping bios. with venice and sandys you have a chance but not the x2's.

you don't have a floppy you can hook up for a bit? or a dvd/cd burner?

i have a burner only on my new computer... the alternate computer only has a ROM, and its a laptop, so i could not burn a disc.

I'm pretty sure that AMD certified that if your motherboard could work with a Venice or Sandiego, You will be able to boot with an x2. Its just that the mobo won't recognize the 2nd core. You will then have to download the new bios and flash it to the 6-23-X(depending on your ram) bios to get full dual core support. I'm pretty sure that 5-10 supports dual core too, but not that sure.

a friend, family, anybody? lol

i guess i'd try the usb then. do a search on dfi.street for "x2 bios" or something and i'm sure you'll get some info but to my knowledge you'll never get an install without flashing.

Yellow slots are for low voltage ram such as TCCD/TCCC

Orange is for everything else and provides more stable high voltage.

Aye w/ ocz EL you might actualy be better w/ the yellow slots if you have a 510 or later bios, w/ 125 or 310, the ornage slots are always better period.
