DFI Nforce 4 ultra memory problems

I'm building a new computer and so far I've been having one big problem. When I put both 512 meg dimms in slots 2 & 4 the computer either won't boot or I get the BSOD. If I just put one in slot 2 (either one) it's fine. I have stock settings. Any idea on what the problem is? Do I have a bad motherboard? Should I try slot 1/3? I read that 2/4 is best.

OCZ ultra high performance dual channel kit (value VX) (2 512 meg dimms)
ultra 600w atx (will be getting ocz instead soon)
ati x800
3200+ venice.

everything is stock, no o/c yet. i have the latest bios and updated drivers all around.
