DFI Infinity P965

Just wondering if Anandtech will review this board. I haven't heard much around the net about it except that it overclocks well.

Was thinking about getting either this or the Bad Axe 2 to replace my transitional Asrock 775 Dual-VSTA board. I'm mainly concerned with rock solid stability with moderate overclock (~3 ghz range) on my E6300.

Also anybody have personal experiences with either of these two boards that you would like to share? I'm more interested in the quirks and problems you've encountered than the success you've had, but I'll take both 🙂

Been running the DFI P965-S board coupla days now
seems like an easy 500+ FSB, much easier than DS3
http://www.bleedinedgesupport.com/ocz/forum/showthread.php?p=217076
some quirks, but lots of help on the net to sort it all out
much better bios options
I have never believed in this, but I think a 24 hour burn in would be appropriate in this case.

Big expensive Enermax galaxy or OCZ ProXStream seem to be ideal fit here - like an 850 or 1000 if you want to go to outer limits

Anyway, having the choice again now, I guess I would get DFI over Gigabyte,
they are making beta bioses, pulling them, and then adding new ones, supposedly one today
It can only get better - lol

just curious, what makes you say a big 1000w is most fitting?

The minute you start talking about major upping of VCore and vdimm and NB and SB etc voltages and shooting for 3.7 - 3.8 - 3.9, you prob will need a very stable powerful no ripple PSU. These solid caps, and new trick power regulation (compliments of Oskar) plus the very fast C2D boot past the bios seems (IMHO) to put a stress on the power supply, especially during extreme overclocking, something I have not seen with boards with foil caps. I have monitored virtually every thread on this new mobo, and there seems to be a common condition for success - the big OCZ PSU's. The proXstream (with an "X") 1000W = no problems. I hate non modular PSU, so luckily for me, OCZ has just come out with the 700W and 900W ModXstream (with an "X") but its so new, its not in retail yet.

I would advise reading the last three pages here, and be very very careful what PSU you employ.

Whenever I post here on AT with an "opinion" I know thats dangerous because people insist on validation.
But I can only say after playing with this mobo, I got an instinct for whats happening. Just my feeling about the PSU that is needed, for better or worse. I'm trying to justify in my mind spending $275 for another PSU just for an overclock like I see on the extreme sites all the time. Looks possible for me this time around..
Only time will tell.

Edit: And good news, after initial bad reports on the new C2D chips, at least one guy got the 6320 and 6420 good ones.

So, at least there is hope.

I would imagine a stable, efficient 500w PSU would be okay for anybody, even overclocking towards the 3.5 ghz range.

Also, BUMP!

I'd love to see a review for this board as well!

Does anyone know if I should expect any problems with IDE optical drives with this board? That's one of the reasons I'm staying away from the DS3.

There are no IDE drive probs on the DFI
The JM 318 controller chip is single IDE port two channel only
And when you turn off ide legacy ("none") on each and every one of the six intel SATA ports in bios (0 - 5), and set Intel SATA mode to AHCI or RAID, on next boot they disappear from Standard CMOS features
Which is what you want them to do, since they are being handed off to Intel ICH8R, and being recognized by its AHCI/RAID bios, not as legacy IDE with MS generic drivers.

They kind of make things a little screwy since the two middle SATA ports are 0-1, and in the manual the 6 ports are numbered 1-6 instead of 0-5 from the top

Feelings have nothing to do with it. It either supplies enough power and works, or it doesn't and causes crashes. You can't feel the difference between having enough power and having 500 watts more than you need.

The second part of what you said is more accurate. You just want to believe it's better, because you spent so much money on it.

Dang it! I've been telling myself that I am not going to do my new build till the right mother board came out. I have been reading about this thing and.....

Okay Anandtech...300+ topic views and multiple requests here. The people have spoken!

P.S. when you review this, can you specifically discuss what three specific Bios settings below do vs. other P965 mobos that don't have them, as well as their impact on OCing:

GTL+Driving Strength
Enhance Data Transmitting
Enhance Addressing

I'd also be curious what impact the 4-phase power regulation has on stability or overclocking compared with the typical 3-phase design. Perhaps compare/contrast it against the Gigabyte P965-DS3 and Asus P5B?

Now it's just a matter of locating one. I'm in the same boat BTW.

The P965-S is the board I just put into my PC with the Intel e6420
love the board 🙂 only downfall is the dammed passive heatsink on the NB. Upping the voltage on the NB kind of creates a lot of heat. gonna be forced to remove my Scythe Ninja too since it hangs over the NB heatsink.

Over on the DFI forum website they have a list of approved PSUs that are proven to work on DFI MoBos (all DFI MoBos not P965-S specific). Sorry no link, bookmark is at work.

Anybody find an etailer that has this this MoBo in stock?? Newegg STILL shows out of stock and ewiz dropped it from their site.

anyone know if the corsair 620hx will work well with the DFI Infinity p065-s ?

I just bought it due to it being very highly recomended and having 50+ amps on the 12v rails...also it's modular!

thanks in advance to anything you guys can tell me 🙂
