What I think will happen up to the finale:
I think Doakes is going to let slip somehow he killed some innocent when he was an assassin and that gives Dexter the excuse to kill him. Then Dexter chops him up, cleans up, disposes of him and Jimenez and returns to Miami saying Doakes kidnapped him and he got shot escaping. Doakes has "disappeared," keeping law enforcement busy indefinitely in searching for him, leaving Dexter in the clear to do his thing in the time being. I think Lily will become his new antagonist going into next season.

But, the show has thrown me for a loop or two before, so I wouldn't be surprised if I'm totally off.

well there's still 3 episodes left in this season so i think the lila thing will get wrapped up by then.

I just watched this episode and WOW, best episode so far!

There are lots of loose ends that Dexter needs to tie up:
- Doakes, if he is left alive he will talk
- The gunshot wound
- He needs to make it back to his house on time, which looks unlikely
- Lila knowing his dark secrets

Judging from the above points, I can't figure out how they can extend the series to a third season. Unless they make a totally unreasonable plotline.

My money is on Dexter framing Doakes for everything. He'll make it look like Doakes got him out there and Dexter was injured trying to get free (gunshot wound in leg) but managed subdue Doakes and lock him up.

The Feds know Doakes is after Dexter so the'll be likely to believe it.

Dexter won't have to kill him while preserving rule #1 (don't get caught).

well they have to leave something hanging if they want another season (which they better do). My guess would be it ends with us not finding out who takes the fall.

I hope the answer to "What is Dex going to do with Lila" is kill her. You can almost tell they are leading up to a Lila / Rita and kids confrontation which Dexter will NOT let go unpunished

I have no clue what Dex is going to do with the caged Doakes. The "code" also included never getting caught and Doakes is on a crash course to have to be dealt with. Doakes has to be killed but it has to look like Dex was defending himself just as the police show up, or as the police show up they find Dex at gunpoint and they kill Doakes themselves trying to protect Dex.

but Dexter would need to explain why he sneaked out of his house in the first place. Won't the agents get suspicious?

It is indeed an amazing show. I think that somehow Doakes will decide to team up with Dexter. They will become unplanned allies.
