I'm not having lockups. Of course I bought the software! How much of a whore do you have to be to complain about something free?

Well purchase the software and see if you can tell any difference. You shouldnt expect Devils Own to work at all let alone well. Anyhow, can I borrow your car for the week? Im running low on gas 🙁

Without placeing judgement I'll just answer your question.

There is no difference between the illegally released "devilsown" version and the professional "corporate" version. Any problems you are having should be unreleated, but who knows what the quality is of the copy you have.

If you like the software, please buy it.

There are plenty of variants of Devil's Own. Some of them have nice backdoors included. No extra charge of course.
I wouldnt touch it with a ten foot pole.

Personally, I don't care where you got the software. It's not my job to police you.

Regardless of the version you are using, legal, illegal, whatever - if it used to work fine and now the performance is slowly changing, I doubt the OS is the problem. But you never know, I guess. But plenty of people with purchased copies have had some pretty strange problems, too.

Wouldn't a firewall stop the typical backdoor? My hardware firewall won't let anyone access my network from the internet, and ZoneAlarm won't let any application or process access the internet from my network without my permission. Or am I missing something?

devilsown or not, problems with freezing is not the operating system's fault. maybe it's a heat problem in your computer, check that out. I've had numerous problems with heat and i'm still having it right now...i guess 1.6ghz isn't cuttin it for me...someone trade me their xp for my 1.4@1.6 😀

That is simply not true. The Devils Own version was hacked together using various OEM releases and some code from the final release candidate as stated publicly by the Devil's Own people. It is -not- a copy of the MS Select, MVLP, etc., versions.
That being said, your problem probably is not related to the illegal software you are running.

The goner virus will delete firewalls on the machine it infects.

That's what anti-virus software is for. AVG caught that one in the e-mails I got from the dodo's I know who were dumb enough to open the attachment. So still no way to access a backdoor, right? Or no?

bozo1 is correct. XP corporate is legal software which has been pirated because, well, its easy. corporate is what, surprise surprise, corporations use (and my college - we can buy a CD for $10 or something like that)

Until the next one comes out and there is no anti-virus update for it. Or the Magic Lantern TROJAN VIRUS that the FBI will soon be (or already has been) implimenting. Nothing is perfect.

Well, of course. But the (slightly off-thread-topic) discussion was about possible backdoors in pirate versions of XP. Or retail versions, for that matter 😉

If it was part of the retail version Microsoft would be able to hide it for pretty much all time, except from those Russian guys that got the source and if they could break into Microsoft who else got in, left a little gift and hid their tracks?

If you can give me a legitimate reason *NOT* to be paranoid Ill use a warezed copy of a Windows OS. I dont think its possible to make me not paranoid though. Paranoia is necessary on the Internet these days.

I stand corrected.
