i've always thought miroslav satan should play for new jersey. sure he's european so you don't pernounce his last name like you imagine, but think of the field day the devils' marketing team would have.

Don't be so sure, they're organized and someone sympathetic to their causes is in office. With that on their side, they don't need numbers. Take, for instance, the PTC (Parents Television Council) - a small group of radical rights who have singlehandedly pressured the FTC to levy so many fines these past few years - it's only a few hundred whackos, but thanks to them the FCC's annual average number of complaints has shot up from a few hundred to in the millions.

I was quite suprised to see a New Jerseyan pushing for the change. Other-staters might not know what the name refers to, but the legend of the Jersey Devil haunting the pines has been alive nearly as long as NJ has been a state. It's a key piece of Garden State folklore and has been the subject of books, movies and campfire scary stories. It's no more "satanic" than a dust devil or a tasmanian devil and any NJan concerned about this misconception should be permanently exiled to NY.

The only thing "wrong" with the Devil mascot is that the Devils are a North Jersey team and the Devil is a South Jersey legend. People that live in and around the pines are typically Flyers fans and don't give a hoot about the Devils aside from hating them.

It has everything to do with PC. Forcing sports teams to change their "objectionable" names is a Democratic PC agenda. This particular Democractic legislator is just using his faith as an excuse to push forward an existing party agenda.
