Device manager problem

Having completed my first build about a month ago I am now having an issue that is a tad beyond my understanding.

This morning I shut down and rebooted. (something i've done many times since completing my build) Upon rebooting I BSOD'd about 6 or 7 times. I finally got windows to return and after looking in Dev Mgr I see that 2 of my ATA Channels are not well.

In Device Manager: under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
I have 6 ATA channels ATA 0 thru ATA 5
Channels 2 thru 5 are fine
Channel 0 and 1 for some reason have 3 entries for each. Meaning when you look at the list there are 3 "ATA Channel 0" and 3 "ATA Channel 1"

For eash of the 3 Chan 0 and 1 there is a yellow triangle with an ! in it. When I click and choose properties It says
This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Now I believe those 2 channels are occupied by my ASUS DVD drive (DRW-2014L1T)
AND a 250gb seagate drive.

any ideas/info? any help greatly appreciated

btw. I am on this machine now, it is running and stable. I can reboot. It takes a long time to shut down.

Install the chipset driver software that came with your MB then in DM delete ALL the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers/channels & reboot. (Dont worry that you'll lose your peripherals...the machine/OS will find & reinstall these & hopefully correctly this time.)

First off thank you for the reply. Sorry it has taken me so long to reply but I was away. B4 I take your suggestion may I ask another question? Would your idea still make sense if I were to say the machine ran for a while w/out a hitch? All of a sudden one day it BSoD and after fighting it backk to life I checked DM and saw the problems. I have been in DM prior to this time and all was ok. I'm sure how long b4 the proble arose but Iwas there.

The only thing that comes to mind is power management (eg, you shutdown the computer when the HDDs were in power management shutdown mode & something didnt go right; I have personally encounterd serious problems with HDDs using power management when using a Promise controller). My advice is to 1st get the ATA controllers straightened out in DM. Second, inspect your power management options. I would avoid use of hibernation. Typically I shut down the HDDs first then later go into standby. You may want to try a setting such as "never turn off HDD" but go into "standby" after 30 min (or never at all).
Also do an internet search about VISTA power management issues as I thought that I saw (at one time) some issues in this area which could relate & there could be an update/fix.

Thanks for the reply, I have recently fixed or repaired my issue. On the Gigabye board I have, p35-ds4 there are 8 sata connections. 2 orange 4 yellow and 2 purple. In my bios The 2 orange and purple are aparently channel 0 and 1 ( 2 entries for each). When I initially fired up the computer I only put the first 6 in AHCI mode. After doing some digging, I hooked up the 2 purple sata conn to a future Esata bracket that came w/the mobo. I then turned the purple Gsata (as gigabyte calls them) from ide to sata. I tried a bunch of fixes based on what ppl suggested and nothing. Then I decided to start simple and return some minor changes back. Luckily I started that one. When put into ide mode (which is the defaul) I rebooted and viola, my arrows are gone. Device mangager is clear (for now 🙂 I will one day have to deal w/this when/if I add external sata drives. But anyway it is repaired.
Thanks for takeing the time to answer me.
