Develop the Moon?

When I saw the title of this article, I almost laughed because of how silly of an idea it is. Considering the fact that everyone down here is quibbling over stupid stuff such as in the middle east, and the international spacestation is suffering from budget shortfalls, I would think that this would be a project maybe 50 years down the road. That was what I thought when I saw the title. After I read the actual article, I had to laugh again at the fact that the UN thinks it has the power to do what it wants with the moon. The UN has decided to declare the entire moon a World Heritage Site. Sure, I agree we shouldn't plunder the moon and wreck it, but come on. Next thing you know the UN is going to declare the entire planet earth a World Heritage Site and you won't be able to remodel your bathroom w/o their permission. Personally, I think we are not going to be developing the moon for quite some time. It will take years just to settle the UN disputes, then years of making the technology, years of fighting about why such and such is behind schedule, years to get the technology onto the moon, years to set it up, then finally it's done. 50 years, minimum IMO.

I agree that it will take a long time, but I don't think that it should have to. We've been dragging our feet on space exploration for too long now. I'm not for ruining the moon, but I certainly wouldn't have a problem with some industrialization. it's not like there's trees or animals or even an atmosphere. It's all dirt and rock. I'd actually be for developing just the far side of the moon, so that the view from Earth doesn't change. 🙂

Uh, unless I read the article wrong, this story has nothing to do with the UN. Its about a proposal by an American professor being put to a Space conference in America.

Still, its interesting that this comes up a couple of days after China announced that it was interested in getting at the moon's resources, and that "Whoever first conquers the Moon will benefit first,"

it doesn't matter who or what organization developes the moon because if any said effort is successful, any moon 'colony' will quickly develop its own identity.

Possibly Yamaha. The only way to make it last would probably be to push the "extended stay" policy, where the residents stay for long periods, possibly years. So yes, it would develop it's own identity because of the people there having distanced themselves from the rest of the world and living in a situation no one has before.
