You do realize there's a difference between (A) a prediction that "it won't turn up anything" from (B) an excuse not to do it, and those 2 things from (C) being ambivalent about the results if the "doesn't turn up anything" prediction is false.
There can be a difference, yes, but in this case there usually is not.
As far as Slow though he's explicitly stating he doesn't care to find out either way.
