after having my fill of oblivion, i wanted to play something new... i typically like fps games and nothing that's come out recently has really caught my interest, so i decided to give another go to one of the best games of all time: deus ex.

the environment/rpg elements/story/totally free gameplay in this game are unmatched and along with half life, is probably the best fps ever made.

however, after staring at all the eye candy in oblivion, it's mighty tough to go back to the ~2001 era of graphics. anyone have any hints for how to get the most from this game? does it support widescreen (ideally 1920x1200)? anyone have any experience with mods that improve the models/textures/anything?

if only this game could be updated to a modern graphics engine, i'd prob. never stop playing it :D

i'm on a CRT, so running it at the max resolution it lists (something like 1280x768) isn't a problem... however, it would obv. look nicer at a much higher, widescreen resolution... and since i'm trying to make it look better, i'm hoping for mods or whatever that can add some eye candy... so, your comment ain't too helpful :)

You may want to try this third-party OpenGL/D3D8 renderer for Unreal/UT/Deus Ex. At least for Unreal/UT, it improves the graphics quality quite a bit and adds several options...you can also use high resolution S3TC textures which are really nice (they make the games look decent even today), but I'm not sure if there are any such textures available for Deus Ex (I'm assuming there aren't).

For setting a custom resolution not normally available in the game's menu, you can edit the [WinDrv.WindowsClient] section of the config/.ini file to contain something like:

FullscreenViewportX=1680
FullscreenViewportY=1050

Then you should be able to switch to fullscreen and it'll use that resolution. At least, that's the way it works in Unreal/Unreal Tournament (which use the same engine), so it should be the same or similar...

Deus Ex is a good game but it's nowhere near the Second Coming everyone makes it out to be. The same applies to HL and HL2 too.

I actually like DEIW more than the original Deus Ex, mainly because of the better weapons and voice acting.

i tried the new drivers, but with no success... i get a couple errors as the game starts, the menu is then VERY twitchy and, while the actual game seems smooth, it looks like crap...

despite deus ex's old graphics... it's still a badass game. stick with it, JC only becomes more of a bada$$ m0f0 as the games go on. i love him.

Can't go wrong with replaying a game like Deus Ex. I've played it through at least 15 times since it came out.

Make sure you use that OpenGL driver though, as it dramatically improves performance in the large open areas.

You mean how the peashooter that can't do headshots in DX2 is superior to the handcannon of a pistol in DX1? Aside from loading points, weapons were the largest problem in DX2. 90% of the time I spent killing people with trash cans and steel crates, not shotguns that take three shots (and one universal ammo magazine) to take down a simple troop.

Thats pretty close to what I was thinking but I didnt feel like crapping on anybody tonight.
Thanks Hamburgerboy.

Also, thanks to one of the above member for the link to the enhanced renderer.
I was getting tired of running the game at 1024x768 on a 23" display.

Follow the link and read the instructions. Its easy, just download the zip and extract the DLL (the only file).
Put it in your System folder under Deus Ex.
You can change the settings in game but its more effective to open the DeusEx.ini file and edit settings directly.
Am currently running at 1600x1200 and its also much smoother than ever before.

Oh, yes!
There are several sets of files on the page. It depends on which game and render mode you want to use.

You won't notice the outdated graphics after you've played for a few hours (or at least not as much).

I think you've got that totally backwards. If you really had trouble killing anything with DX2's superior weaponry you were really doing something wrong. And it's the original pistol that is the pea-shooter, not a hand cannon.

Not to mention that you could actually hit something when you first started in DX2, unlike the billion dollar government agent in the original that couldn't hit the broadside of a barn on Liberty Island while any common street terrorist could score headshots while running from a distance.

:confused:

never had that issue myself. I played it through on realistic years ago and never had an issue... of course, I was likely running a non patched version of it on my lowly Voodoo2 12 meg and 333mhz celeron since I didn't know any better :)

Nat

*And I played ~4 hours of DEIW and hated it, never picked it up again. It ran like crap and looked like it too. Yuck.

**The original pistol can drop almost anything with one shot. Be a man an use the unsilenced version :p Later when I played on realistic I used the infinite inventory cheat (hold something, drop something else, layer it in inventory, repeat) and I liked the weaponry better because I could actually carry all the interesting pieces, although making you choose was definitely a good game dynamic.
