I am blown away by this game. I am playing on the hardest difficulty which I believe is Deus Ex mode and even though I have to save early and save often ( and still die) it never is frustrating. It makes me think and plan out every single move.

I would easily put this into the top 20 games I have ever played. Again this is just my opinion. I am playing the game fully stealth and without kills, not putting the first boss into the mix as I don't think you can continue without killing him. I explore every room I find, hack every single terminal, computer, Sensor pad I find and its so much fun.

I am curious to hear your thoughts.

Now you understand why the PC Master Race talks about the original in hushed tones. :)

Great game.

FWIW, I recommend the ENB mod for it...which pretty much just gets rid of that ugly yellow hue covering everything.

Makes the game a lot more colorful and visually enjoying. No performance hit, btw.

I will look into that. At the moment the only mod I am using is the energy cell regen mod which should have been in the game anyways.

It was a fun game.

Depending on how you like to play, even on hard it's possible to go through the whole game without killing anyone except the bosses as they were mandatory kills. Silent non-lethal takedowns give the most XP. In most areas I'd spend quite a bit of time trying to take everyone down without causing an alarm before moving on for max XP, but some areas I did give up on and just sneaked out. IIRC hacking gives XP also as I remember clearing an area then hacking everything around that I could even though a lot had nothing of importance or would only have helped take out the guards.

With trying to max XP (every so many levels gives you a praxis) and tracking down hidden praxis by end game you can have most of the augs maxed out.

I am playing on Deus Ex difficulty and so far other than bosses I have yet to kill anyone. Its very tough, as the AI detects you very easily so always need to watch out. I hack everything even if I dont need it, in fact sometimes I will hack something even if I have the password just for the extra xp + bonus.

I've heard the same things about Dark Souls, so you may want to look into that after you finish Deus Ex.

I remember playing that a long time ago, but the difficulty was insane on some parts.

I never did play through that.... hrm might have to get a copy.

The original is one of the greatest games ever made, I remember buying a $300 Geforce 2 GTS just to play it.

I just couldn't get into this game. I have tried numerous times and just can't do it. Something about it just don't grab me and I'll play past the first mission or two and then just completely lose interest.

I have read the plot synopsis to see if I would enjoy it, and it just doesn't seem like a good story worth playing through for.

Yep it's a great game. :) It has an intriguing story, engrossing aesthetics and atmosphere, and gameplay mechanics which allow you to approach situations in a variety of ways (take enemies out quietly, direct assault, circumvent enemies entirely, etc.) The specially customized PC control scheme is nice, too.

The biggest criticism of the game was the boss battles -- they basically threw the "approach situations in a variety of ways" concept out the window and made you have to fight them directly. If you had specced your character out to be good at hacking, stealth, etc., instead of fighting, you were basically screwed. The recently released Director's Cut overhauled the boss battles so there are more ways of beating them. It does cost a bit of money, though it's discounted if you already own the game and the Missing Link DLC. The Director's Cut also removes that yellow lens filter that some people dislike.

I gave up on it after awhile....I was in the police station hacking a terminal and the cops starting firing at me...I killed every single cop in the station and when I walked outside it was like nothing happened...broke the immersion for me, lol.

Maybe they were just very scared after that and didn't want to approach you

IIRC, they said that boss fights weren't made by them, supposedly outsourced to a 3rd party.

I finished the game twice and after seeing this thread I'm playing it again, director's cut this time around. You never asked for this but unless you guys insist on clearing your backlogs in alphabetical or chronological order, you really should play the game. I've been gaming for 30 years and this game is in my all time top 30 for sure. You get the most out of it if you set specific goals for yourself such as non lethal playthrough without triggering any alarms.

They (Eidos Montreal) also later admitted that that's not really an excuse. They knew the boss fights were going to run counter to the core mechanics of the game, but they released the game like that anyways. The end result is their responsibility, and the end result fell just a bit short because of the boss battles.

It stinks now because I just planted the bomb and snuck through in the pod so I know there is not a tremendous amount left to play.. and I don't want it to end.

Directors Cut has become my favorite game in years, if not of all time.

I would think that an overstatement, but its really not. I ran across Dues Ex for the first time in Nov of last year, and have since played through 2 2/3 times. Its entertaining, has depth(something many games claim and few actually accomplish in any meaningful-to-the-game sort of way). Story is pretty good(if not great), has mutiple options/choices throughout...just hands down a very good title. I'm still pretty surprised I've never heard of it until recently.

Anyone with this game on their backlog should put it to top of the list.

Also, Commentary that comes with the Directors Cut(optional in "Extras" menu) is quite entertaining in and of itself.

Deus Ex: HR Director's Cut is on deal right now for Steam, i was reading about performance issues those. Have they been officially fixed? How would the Directors Cut run on my rig?

So i played Dishonored, it was nice, i can describe the game as a "backstabbing-portal-assassination game". i was expecting more RP elements and character customization, so DX was better in my opinion.

Did they ever fix the bugs that were originally fixed in vanilla and then reintroduced in the directors cut?

Nope, which is one of the main reasons I'm not buying it.

So the best version of the game is the original and you can't even buy it anymore? If they aren't going to be bothered to fix the buys they should at least allow people to purchase the original.

EM has claimed they still have the Second Screen update planned, but they can't release it yet because they based it on Intel's perceptual screen control software, which is "coming soon". So it's possible they have fixed some of these bugs in that patch and are holding off on releasing it. Of course that's no excuse in my opinion, they need to fix the bugs they introduced on their own time, as the definitive version shouldn't be buggier than the one they removed from Steam.

It's unfortunate that the story and general development takes such a nosedive a little over halfway through, because I went from being very impressed (and the original is my favorite game) to literally offended/angry at the very end.

You make a very good point.

The gameplay, depth, and mechanics were all quite good for a modern game. I liked the voice actor, I liked the look of the game, I liked the basic plot early on, I liked the depth of conversational options... the music... the homages to the original... the inventory... the number of augs, etc.

But yes, as you say, the ending was really pretty awful. I didn't find it to be SO bad that it ruined the experience for me, but it was certainly a let down after the earlier greatness.

How do you know if you haven't bought it?
The official forum and Steam forum has users posting about bugs that were in the original HR release but fixed in patches, now cropping up again in the DC. It appears that the PC version of the Directors Cut was simply ported from the WiiU version, which means it doesn't have the PC specific fixes that Nixxes implemented, it only has the fixes that EM did for the 360 version. Other users have screens showing downgraded SSAO quality and in general, less detailed lighting, which again could be attributed to being ported from the WiiU. To top it all off, various textures are missing entirely, scaled incorrectly, or don't have spectral maps; issues that were never present in any previous versions of the game. They have released one patch so far, but it didn't fix much, and especially didn't seem to fix the PC specific issues that Nixxes worked on. To be honest, I'd be surprised if we ever see a definitive version on PC, because it appears EM is doing everything in house this time.
