Seriously. Navarre came along and I just pulled out my GEP gun, said "fck you" out loud during her challenge and blew that b!tch to hell.
I don't miss the firearms nearly as much as my shiny blue Dragon's Tooth. 🙁

I'll have to post screens when I get home as my memory is pretty bad ... 😛

Augs: Right now it's basically maxed Combat Strength and Speed Enhancement. The rest are just L1 skills until I can grab some more upgrade cans, but those two and the Regeneration/Power Recirculator combo is all I'll probably ever need.

Skills: Master Low-Tech, and Trained in Electronic/Computer/Lockpick/Med/Demo. Low-Tech is obvious, since Master skill in that pretty much lets you one-shot anyone from behind - I only need to turn on Combat Strength for augmented enemies. Elec/Comp/Lock are all needed to avoid combat. L2 Med makes medkits last MUCH longer, and Demo gives me three more beeps to pull another grenade off the wall to add to my stash.

Loadout: Crossbow/Baton are the big two, of course. I keep the stealth pistol to set off grenades from a distance, a sawed-off with sabot to take out mechanical problems, and everyone's favourite death-dealer, the GEP, is relegated to scrapping bots.

Best advice if you decide to try this yourself - max out the Leg aug ASAP. It's far easier to avoid combat entirely with L4 Speed - especially when you remember that falling damage essentially doesn't exist anymore. When it came time to broadcast the distress signal from the rooftop, it was just a matter of swan-diving off the edge, landing with a solid "oof" instead of a "splat", and with Speed/Regen/Recirc all going, it was about two seconds before I was out of the area.

Second-best advice: Gas grenades are massively underrated. Bounce one under a table of troopers, prime the crossbow, and they'll all be out cold before the clouds dissipate. Of course, you could just hit the Combat Strength and baton them all, but keep an eye on your health if you're sucking gas yourself. 😉

So you're taking speed over silent running. I usually take silent running along with invisibility so that I can sneak up on people and baton them. I'll try speed next time.

I wonder how difficult it would be to do a no kill, no weapon use (other than gas grenades) game on realistic difficulty.

Speed > Silence all the way. Take the MJ12 armory for example. With Silent, you have to stealth-KO them all, avoid detection, and make sure you don't trip the bot. Takes a long time, and uses lots of BE/charger/dart ammo. Speed, you just hit the boosters, haul ass clear across the room, vault over the bot, and duck into a hiding area. Done. There's also the lack of falling damage and superjump to make certain events a lot easier - the aforementioned swan-dive off the roof of the NSF HQ, going 3F->Lobby in half a second in Versalife, and any situation where they expect you to bust through a wall of ground troops.

I wonder how difficult it would be to do a no kill, no weapon use (other than gas grenades) game on realistic difficulty.
I can see two problems. One is a nuisance, the other could be a gamebreaker.
1. Anna Navarre - scaring her out the door with gas grenades is annoying, but doable.
2. Howard Strong - you have to KO him to clear the Silo, and I don't know if he can be gassed.

If you consider it acceptable, Howard Strong sometimes kills himself with his own LAMs, which bounce off the railing on that utility truck thing he's standing on. Otherwise, you can certainly gas/tranq him; he is no stronger than a normal soldier.

And yeah, speed is far superior to silence even if you're trying a stealthy playthrough of the game.

He is vulnerable to gas, but it won't damage him. You can, however, trick him into shooting himself in the foot, literally. If you run under the cherry-picker he's on enough he'll keep trying to motion-compensate and blast you, and wind up hitting his own leg. It takes a while, but he'll die.

Shifting paradigms without a clutch now, I feel I would be remiss if I didn't point out that there's a rather large collection of Deus Ex mods on moddb at the moment, particularly "expansion" mods, so if any of y'all are getting bored of the SP campaign you can check those out. I highly recommend Zodiac, RedSun 2020, The Cassandra Project, Hotel Carone and Burden of 80 Proof.

Also, I have a mod there, but it just changes the rules. It can run in conjunction with the above-mentioned mods though, as can most of the other "ruleset" mods. Like Hardcore. (not my mod) You thought Deus Ex was hard? Try it with Hardcore running.

"realistic" isn't hard enough? 😛

When you've beaten Deus Ex as many times as I have, no, it isn't.

Why do you think I started modding it? The SP campaign was getting a little old. That, and there are a few shortcomings in the game worth fixing.

/thread resurrection

So I did beat it with no kills.

Then I went through on Realistic again to work the violence out of my system. So many sections were made so much easier by the fact that I could just whip out the trusty GEP gun and clear a room with a WP rocket instead of trying to pick people off one by one. 😀

What annoyed me is that when I played the game, I had to kill twice:
1. Gunther? Or whatever his name was, with the killswitch
2. NOT my fault: During the hostage situation where you first meet the cybernetic chick, I went in the backway to clear the enemies out. When I got towards the top section, one of the enemies ran off towards the "good guys" who mowed him down. At the office, they credited me with the kill, even though I didn't purposefully or even accidentally kill him myself. :|
