The NSF had no involvement with the gold in the first game.
I think I recall the Illuminati sending in some NSF soldiers that arrived from America to secure the gold after MJ12 was eliminated by JC.

When you find the gold, Everett just says he will send one of his own guys to recover it. As far as I know, the Illuminati doesn't work with or contact the NSF at all in the first game. The only connection between them seems to be Harley Filben, who says he's a double agent that reports to both of them.

CONTACT: MORGAN EVERETT EVERETT The gold -- wonderful! My people will take control when you move out. I believe you know Chad. I've given him control of an NSF platoon on loan to me from America.

Chad is now the leader of the WTO. Chad is in charge of the NSF troops. But, the WTO does not fit exactly with the philosophy of the NSF (as a matter of fact, they are opposites). Not sure how the gold ended up in the hands of the new Templars. It looks like The Illuminati told Chad to use the NSF troops to secure it. I wonder if the NSF double crossed him during the collapse?

Well, finished two of the endings. I watched the rest on YouTube. Good game, but my original complaints stand. There really was no "good" ending. Either you have an AI take over the world and enslave humanity (Helios), the borg take over humanity and assimilate everyone (Omar), the Illuminati take over with a global sham democracy where they are actually the perpetual rulers behind the scenes and censor / control all communications or the Templars take over and purge the world of nanites. The Templars' grand master looks like an Ayatollah type character, not sure if he is any better than the Illuminati...
