I love it when outsiders think they know stuff about stuff they don't know a lot of stuff about.

As much as I hate living in Michigan. I do not find Detroit "miserable" at all. I have fun every time I hit Detroit. I love downtown, I love Greektown, I love Campus Martius. I was born and raised in Detroit....I think I have a lot more experience with the city than some person in another state voting for something on the interwebs.

So...I could give two squirts about Forbes rankings.

OP probably lives in Pontiac or Flint...which is honestly more miserable than Detroit can ever be.

I haven't been to Detroit in over 15 years, but lots of other places in Michigan in the past two. In my experience, the drivers are much better there, but we do have better roads (albeit constantly under construction).

Usually someone describing drivers as "dicks" or "psychos" are very slow driving, passive, and indecisive. The drivers that have those qualities describe the others as "morons" or "dumbshits".

Can't say I have any reason to visit Detroit lately, but that could change for work reasons. I can't imagine it's much worse than Cleveland, or bad driving in Cincinnati.

Who "voted" it most miserable?

An how do you compare cities by voting? "Uhh, I vote that your city is more miserable than mine." ya ok.

I live in a suburb of Detroit that was "ranked" one of the top 50 best places to live in America in 2011

I do find Michigan drivers (with Detroit being the extreme) by and large much more rude than Ohio drivers. Tailgating and cutting you off, even without a signal, is WAY more common in Detroit.

I am by no means a slow driver. Give me room and I will go 82mph all the way too work and back. But I don't weave in and out and ride a persons bumper at 80mph like a lot of MI drivers will do.

People on the internet. You know, those same people that think that all of Detroit looks like the wasteland from Fallout 3.

IE. Idiots.

Learning to drive in Detroit has made me a better driver. After I moved to Virginia, I realized that many of those people do not know how to drive and accidents happen all the time. You literally have to watch out for everyone because people will do shit like come onto the highway and merge all the way into the leftmost lane with NO turn signal to boot. It's scary, but once you do your time driving in Detroit, you anticipate everything and you know how to do death with it.

Especially tailgaters and people cutting you off. If I had a dime for every time that happened to me driving into DC, I'd be rich.

Just curious but will you be moving back to Detroit?

Im a great driver. Never been in an accident and I drive quick in my track car and more relaxed in my Lexus. I let faster people pass and use my turn signals.. you know basic courteous driving. Something a lot of people here have no clue about. They don't like using turn signals and people in the fast lane like to block the faster cars in which is illegal in most states btw. I noticed in Florida most people move over if you come up on them in the fast lane and there are signs saying to move over for faster traffic.

It's not about votes. It's based on statistics. How many people leave per year, crime, jobless, wages, poverty etc.

I see California has the most cities of any state listed. Not surprising.

Parking Wars is filmed there, so it can't be all that miserable. I am sure the towing companies love Detroit a lot.

Detroit sounds like it could be a nice quiet place. No traffic, abandoned, peaceful looking houses, birds and squirrels nesting among the overgrown trees as human civilization slowly returns back to nature. The sound of the wind going through the trees, the chirps of birds, and the popping of... wait, was that a gun shot? Holy Shiiiii.... Step on the gas let's get out of here!

haha keep being in denial that where you live sucks bro

Perfect example.. thanks for posting.

Great reply! He's 100% right. Everything you are pissing and moaning about is true for most big cities. Traffic? Weather? People are assholes? Sounds like Florida just gained another grumpy old man :) BTW - like Train said there are some beautiful Detroit suburbs.

Not only that, these types of surveys are always skewed against Detroit because Detroit proper is actually quite small. It would be like if only Compton were considered L.A., or only Brooklyn was NYC, and everything else was a 'burb and counted seperately.

And don't get me wrong, I'v railed against Detroit for the corrupt mess it is, and how stupid a lot of it's voters are. But Metro Detroit (basically Wayne & Oakland counties) can stack up nicely against any major metropolitan area.

I wouldn't even drive through parts of Detroit using Googlemaps. Too bad for a city once known as the world automotive hub, which helped bring about grandiose city planning projects such as the now defunct Michigan Central Station.

Beautiful? Not really.. Ann Arbor is nice.. I live in Plymouth and that is somewhat nice. And last time I checked I was entitled to an opinion.

Must be the down river people getting all butt hurt.

I'm sure the OP will tell me i'm in denial, but I love it here. We have an incredible local music scene. I've played all over the country and there is no place like detroit. So many talented people performing all the time. So much more variety than most places. There is an endless amount of fun stuff to do in detroit. I always have an incredible time and it's very rare anyone I know ever runs into any trouble. I love that in the summer I can go a few miles north and find some of the most beautiful places imaginable to hike, go biking, kayaking, canoeing, ect. I could very easily live anywhere I want. I choose to stay right here.

I got lambasted on Jalopnik for saying that Detroit was the closest equivalent to Gotham City. I went there for the International Car Show and had to walk 5-6 blocks to get to Cobo Hall. We had to walk down a street where I'm sure a murder every 5 minutes occured. I thought my son was going to see me killed and they he would have to grow up to be Batman or something.

I had like 50 people yelling at me with replies like "You puss...I walked down those streets at 1am with $10K worth of camera gear".

Yeah...right.

Yeah...right.

If you were 5 blocks from Cobo you were probably MUCH more safer than you think. Detroit definitely has some pretty dangerous areas, but I would not consider that one of them.

What's sad is a lot of the buildings in downtown Detroit are architectural masterpieces...but they're covered in grime and broken windows. They don't make buildings like that anymore.

This was right next to the parking lot we were forced to use because the main one was full. My son got a kick out of it:
