Great matchup for the Cup. Rooting for the Pens since they whooped up on the Flyers... we need a poll here for Pens or Wings!
poll added 😎

my vote goes to the Pens, i just think they have the mojo right now. also, i think they have LOTS of skill all through the lineup - enough to play with Detroit anyway!

The Pens are probably the most overrated team, skillwise, in the NHL. They have players on every line that can get things done. Detroit willbe able to factor out Crosby or Malkin or Staal or Malone or Hossa. The Pens have had it so easy in the eastern conference that Gary Roberts has been a healthy scratch.

Fixed.

...and it's true, eastern conference is like picking cherries, there are no teams that could compare to say wings, dallas, san jose, ducks, etc other than pen's. They have yet to even come close to being challenged.

I have to kinda take issue with that. Just because they made mincemeat out of their opponents so far doesn't mean that the East is crap. It just means that the Pens are head & shoulders above the rest right now which I believe to be true. Overrated skillwise? come on man... if you think the Wings have a skilled lineup, surely you must put the Pens at least on par with that? just sayin...

I know Wings fans usually take a crap on the rest of the league but the Pens deserve to be there in the final IMO.

I was surprised of the fight the Stars put on (or lack thereof)... It should be a nice match up! I have to say this year's NHL playoff games have been pretty boring compared to previous years.

Keep dreaming. I'm apparently not the only one that thinks you're smoking something. Go check out ESPN.

I wasn't talking about just the playoffs, I was talking about all year long, eastern conference used to have good teams; this year all the teams that were once good tanked(devils, lightning, leafs, sabres, hurricanes, etc.) I also didn't say they weren't skilled, just overrated, but they deserve to be be where they are at this point. I just don't think they would have thrived as well as they did if other EC teams had played better games.

I would be willing to bet they are people who would say Datsyuk, Franzen, Zetterberg, Etc. are over-rated too. It just comes with the nature of the game.

Well, Franzen is overrated. That's like trying to say R.J. Umberger is good because he scored 8 goals against montreal. Franzen has 84 points in 221 games. Datsyuk and Zetterberg are pretty clutch players though, both with about a point/game over their careers.

Franzen was a rookie in 05/06. He got a fraction of icetime compared to those guys. A lot of great players start out slow, I think he is one of those. I don't think he will be a flash in the pan, a la Pisani in the 05/06 playoffs. The Mule is the real deal IMO.

Umberger is a nice player but his post season play in the montreal series reminded me alot of John Druce back in the early 90s. That 1 series made his career. Umberger won't be a dog like Druce was in his career, he is a useful part to a team, a 3rd line center that can step up offensively for short stretches. But he is nothing more.

As for the east vs west, they do have to play the games still. Pens by far have the best balanced, most complete team in the east, as do the wings in the west, so it really should be interesting how this series goes. Oversimplifying as its easy to do, alot will depend on whose goaltending bubble bursts. Will it be the veterans on the wings or the still relatively inexperienced pens goalies.

I hope it goes seven too, and I hope it is a very hard-fought and excellent series.

About the only thing worth talking about:

DETROIT -- Johan Franzen has been cleared to practice with the Red Wings.

Franzen (concussion-like symptoms) skated on his own for the second consecutive day Thursday and has been cleared by doctors to begin working out with the team, which he will do on Friday.

Coach Mike Babcock said Franzen is skating well. Babcock expects Franzen to be in the lineup at some point in the Stanley Cup Finals, although not likely in Game 1 on Saturday.

"He'll be available, I don't know at what point," Babcock said. "We're really optimistic. Doctors will make those decisions (when Franzen will play). I don't think he'll play in Game 1."

Added general manager Ken Holland, "He's been working out and he's feeling a lot better. He's doubtful for Game 1."

Franzen, who leads the league with 12 playoff goals, has been unavailable since Game 2 of the previous series against Dallas when persistent headaches forced him out of the lineup.

LOL - watching Babs talk about that in the press conference was kinda funny.

"This isn't a coaches decision - it's all doctors. He's ready"

heheh

Pens in 5 especially if they can steal one of the first two in Detroit..

Go Pens!!!
that would be something to see, not because it would entail Pittsburgh playing amazing, but more because it would be due to a complete meltdown by the Wings. I can't see it happening... they are so disciplined it's scary. They are a scary team right now, period. If anything gets exposed, maybe it will be the inexperience of the Pens and Fleury in particular. There are so many X-factors in this series that I think I'm going to print out the logos of both teams and take them to the bathroom to fap all over them.

Pens in six is my prediction.

I think that the Pens will get one in Detroit and the Wings will hand the Pens their first home loss since Feb.

You do realize that Pittsburgh was 8-1-1 against the west this year, right?

They were 4-1 against the NW teams (beating Van, Min, Cal, Ed and losing to Col) and 4-0-1 against the Pacific (beating SJ, Dal, Pho, LA and picking up a point against Ana).

As has already been stated....you should be committed for thinking that the Pens have little offensive depth and can't handle western teams.

Hell, Detroit had a worse record vs. the east going 7-2-1.
