What? Why can't they tax the riches more? Raise more taxes, oops, revenue pronto. That will solve everything. :D

I agree with this poster from the article.

I am a Detroit native. The best thing that could happen is that financial control is taken away from those who have abused it, and that would be the city council. They have been crooked for years and the people who continue to vote for them do so out of mental laziness, ignorance and racism

You get what you asked for, Detroit.

Edit: "Forget the big comeback; Detroit focuses on what can be saved"

Excuse my ignorance, but, what does "broke" means? California is in huge debt, hell, US of A has 16 Trillion dollars of debt that we can NEVER pay back, so what's wrong with Detroit? I think Detroit is doing just fine compared to the nation...

What do you expect when we have to pay for all the Welfare States in the South?

Going broke as in promising to pay nice salaries and pensions to public employees and now not having enough tax revenue to cover those an other liabilities. People will buy U.S. debt as an investment... no one will touch Detroit debt.

What Welfare states are you talking about?

Michigan has more welfare recipients than say Alabama. Or do you have a specific state in mind?

Cities are going broke due to bad planning. Fast money from selling land. Long term high expenses.

http://globalpublicsquare.blogs.cnn.com/2012/07/31/the-cost-of-americas-inefficient-sprawl/

The only dense areas in Detroit covers what, 1 sq km? And I assume most of that is offices.

Detroits urban density should be at least 3 times higher.

Detroit could be 30 times as dense and it wouldn't matter. It's much more about African-nation level corruption and extremely poor political leadership than simple density.

Broke = can't pay the bills. Read the article and it was about day to day operation, promising of pension and retirement accounts, so on.

The problem with Detroit is it is broke and it can't borrow money (its muni bonds are junk status - see my link below). At least the US and states like Cali can have some breathing room by borrowing or other things to get by. The money problem has been going on (accumulating) for years and years. It just did not happen overnight.

What do you expect when we have to pay for all the Welfare States in the South?

Are you really saying what you are saying? Detroit is broke because it has pay for "all the Welfare States in the South"? Care to provide links/sources from reliable sources to back up or you are just going to talk out of your butt, again as usual?

My link (from Time, a well know liberal source) = http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1887864,00.html

Detroit's motto, coined in 1827 to memorialize a devastating fire, translates from Latin as "We hope for better things; it shall arise from the ashes." But hope is in short supply. At 13%, Detroit's unemployment rate is the worst in the country among major metropolitan areas. City hall, long racked by corruption and cronyism, became a punch line last fall amid former mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's imprisonment. To make matters worse, the city is struggling to bankroll potential remedies. Its projected $300 million budget deficit recently spurred ratings agencies to downgrade its municipal bonds to junk status. (See pictures of Detroit's decline.)

Your turn.

Let us just sell michigan, florida and california off to other countries.

That could fix many, many money issues in 1 swoop.

Just like all the other american cities heading for broke with the same density issues?

Too easy to throw the guilt on someone else.

At least California is trying to do something about it:

Better late than never I guess.

Not just in the US:

Do you even think before posting? Detroits issues have nothing to do with federal wealth transfers between states.

You get what you asked for, Detroit.

You say that with such anger. What about pity? Do you not understand the impotency of rage? You don't see it but your soul is hurt and you seek revenge. There is none to be had. Healing comes from surrender. Look at your sig. You are upside down in the world.

You say this as if the leaders of Detroit suffered some natural calamity and America is turning their backs on them. No. Leaders were elected to be good stewards of public tax money. They failed miserably and continued to be re-elected to continue this travesty.

I suppose Svlna should have sympathy for the detroit council members who suffer from liberal brain ailment that allows them to see no wrong in taking care of themselves at the expense of the Detroit taxpayer.

What makes you think the US can't pay it back? Something like 40% of the budget is medicare, medicaid, and social security. Kill everybody older than 60, raise the taxes, and the US will have 0 debt in maybe 10 years.

I guess we are supposed to have sympathy and pity for this = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kwame_Kilpatrick

and this = http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrFvAiQDuEo :D

As I said in post #8, the problems have been going on for years and years.

Detroit should be left to die. It already looks a lot like Fallout 3, but it would be cool to have the whole thing turn into Fallout 3. The only difference is that Fallout 3 was based in Washington DC, and the area was called the capital wasteland. Downtown was occupied by super mutants while the suburbs were occupied by marauders and what not.

No shame? What happened to it? Just because you can't deal with the impotence of rage won't make rage effective. You could profit from knowing that Detroit isn't your fault, although you feel it is and don't know it, so there is no point in being angry it's all f'ed up. Our culture made the people of Detroit whatever kinds of basket cases they are, just as it made you a different kind of basket case. You can't help feeling you are guilty but you're not. Let go of your anger toward these sad miserable people so you can let go of your anger toward yourself. I know you don't know it, but this is your real condition.

May I ask what ethnicity you are?
You seem like a pretty educated guy, but your consistent grammatical mistakes and constant proclamation of being an immigrant leave me pondering this.

I am just a nobody. An old white geezer living in a broken down trailer, making my living by cooking fried foods and moonshine to taken care my 16 kids (all mine I hope). I dropped out of 2nd grade to marry my cousin, barely able to read and write. At least what some of the posters believe so, therefore, you should trust them.

Anyways, the thread is about Detroit, not me.

I always assumed Asian.

I don't know Kung Fu and am not too great with Math. Plus I have 2 feet penis, not just 1 ft. Does not compute.

This is just a smug circle jerk you know. These posters are dancing a jig that this is abject proof that "those" people can't govern themselves. It makes them warm an fuzzy all over to know this.
