The BASIC IGNORANCE in this thread is astounding. The overwhelming majority, of all the "Arabs" who live in the Detroit area are . . . wait for it, waaaiiiit for it:

Christian

including, but not limited to, Maronite from Lebanon (and hence, Syria, but you're going to have to learn that one for yourselves), Chaldean, Coptic, Orthodox, etc -- all freaking, fucking Christian!

The Detroit area Arab community has existed since the 1880's, and really started to expand in the early 1900's when they came to work for Ford.

It's safe to say that many have been multi-generational Americans since long before many of YOU washed up on these shores.

The Arab community there is huge. It's probably the biggest Arab community in the US. Many have small shops in the ghetto areas, and they don't take shit from their customers, either.

Many of you folks in this thread really ought to educate yourself on the amazingly diverse history of your own damn country on your way to educating yourself on the complex socio-political aspects of this world in which you live . . .

Because your basic ignornace and yahoo stupidity really reeks.

If there's a fire, then you surely have the right to yell "FIRE!!" in a crowded theater. Wait a minute--how often do you go to the opera anyway? Is there something nobody here knows about your love of theater? Please share.

Now, if you commission a small lot of t-shirts with a cartoon of a man yelling "FIRE!!" in a crowded theater, and you proceed to wear that t-shit (even to a theater), only the humor-less and the paranoid will give you any grief about it.

See! Stuff like that is funny!

Yeah, we should find more ways to limit that free speech, and locate more places to limit it in. THINGS ARE GETTING REAL CRAZY!

Is my sarcasm meter pegged out or just broken?

If someone wore that shirt to a high school I would fully support it being confiscated from whomever was wearing it.

Kids go to school to learn, not try and create conflict. They can exercise their free speech rights on their own time.

Except they basically admit that's not the case. And it takes great intellectual acrobatics not to see their jihadist sympathies coming through loud and clear with the windows on the numerals and their mascot flying into it.

School officials said the boys intended the shirts to be displays of class pride and did not understand that they would be perceived as offensive

Fail again. I really hope your efforts in this thread are meant to be over the top satire.

Is this for me? If so read on, otherwise disregard the following: What's your plans if it isn't? Are you gonna beat me up and take my lunch money? I asked a question that came to mind, don't like it? GFY.

I don't support either side in this "War on Terror", I wish everyone blinded by their beliefs could see how ludicrous it is, but we both know that will never happen. That doesn't mean I won't ask the questions that come to mind. I didn't have the info, so I brought it up. (Here's some sarcasm) I'm so sorry I asked!! ..|..

The only fail your double fail. One in listening to what PC administrators say in order to defer criticism instead of what the students themselves say - much like failing to listen to terrorists that occurs in the West but instead listening to sanitized and apologetic versions by their Western heirings like Muslim supported Carter Center. And failure to read the thread where I already quoted the students.

"student told Local 4 the design was made out of frustration over some media portrayals of Arab-Americans in the wake of the Christmas day terror attack...."

Where in that quote of the students do you see proof of any anti-Americanism or terrorist sympathy? I see young Americans angry that they are portrayed as terrorist sympathizers when they are not.

As for the bolded, Geeze, Mr. Z, if you didn't know before you most certainly know NOW from my previous post as pointed to in my pm to you that most of these Arab-Americans are not only multi-generational Americans but CHRISTIAN.

You're a good guy who has always had my personal respect, Zebo, and I really dislike seeing your judgment clouded by what in my opinion are lazy faux-nativist hate generalizations. :'(

Note: "Arabs" didn't wear these shirts, "Arab-Americans" did. You know, American citizens like the rest of you.
I attend college in Dearborn, and went to high school not to far from there. Just because the media tells you they're American citizens doesn't mean they are. A lot of the Arabs I know traveled here to escape the violence/oppression, but are not yet US citizens. On top of that, they get college tuition prices I can only dream of, tax incentives I can only dream of, and business incentives I can only dream of.

Having t-shirts made that depict something flying into 'twin' buildings and a witty sarcastic slogan isn't in their best interests, especially if they're trying to improve their perceived image and avoid racial tension. I do know a few things though. I've met quite a few kids, even teachers and college professors, who go out of their way to demean and destroy American values.. this is most likely one of those groups of kids that do exist.. and having Gibraltar Trade Center just a few miles from my house, I know what type people like to hang out there and what type vendors deal there.

Taking the politically correct and politically expedient high ground may look good on the internet, but you need to live some things first hand to know what you're talking about.

It just isn't possible that those defending it here have failed to understand the meaning. They know damn well what it means and their attempt to feign ignorance really smokes me. I try to understand their motivation and fall short of anything other than treason.

Orady and Bawardi are two that I've recently had that like to go on tangents that have nothing to do with course material. They've said everything from the Constitution needs to be revoked, to going on tangents of how the holocaust didn't happen, to how we have too many personal freedoms that effect their 'home country', etc. I even had a Chemistry lab instructor (Thomas A. Hamade) who went on a rant about how terrorists need to start arming themselves with 'chemical, nuclear and biological weapons' and should start using them against the 'Jews and Americans' because it isn't fair how we have better weapons in the war on terror. If I was going to list every professor I've had that said something un-American and whose goal was to destroy my freedoms in some way, it would take far too long.. those are just the ones that stick out to me.

I call bullshit on 100% of this.

Dismissing outright the silly argument that since you know a couple of Arabs from Michigan who aren't yet citizens you're now an authority on what the citizenship status of these and other Arabs in the region, I'd like to hear under what program non-citizens receive lower college tuition rates than native-born Americans. And what tax and business incentives exist for Arab immigrants to Michigan that can't be procured by others?

Instead, how about a couple of links to the bargain-basement tuition rates for Arabs you've dreamt you could get?

Go ahead and google Michigan tuition incentives. You don't have to be a citizen, and minorities get even better benefits. Most of my Arabic friends I'm in college with get FREE college.

Since you're the one who brought it up and then told the rest of us we don't know what we're talking about, why don't you provide a direct link to these tuition incentives where you don't have to be a citizen/provide better rates if you're of Arab descent? I also see that we've gone from talking about "college tuition prices I can only dream of" to "college tuition prices everyone can get".

When we've cleared up the tuition question, we'll move on to the world of Arab-only tax incentives in the state of Michigan. Sounds very interesting!

Do you have proof that the students invloved with the making and wearing of these T-shirts are Christian? If so I'd really like to see it, otherwise your point is wasted.

If these kids want to change what they beleive to be discrimination against them due to their heritage then perhaps some T-shirts that said BORN IN AMERICA would better fit the bill rather then something that can be taken the wrong way. Hell, I bet they'd still be wearing them and changing people's preconcieved stereotypes of them.

Never heard of FAFSA? http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

And for fucks sake, we have an entire federal agency that hands out grants/incentives/breaks for minority owned businesses and minority entrepreneurs. http://www.mbda.gov/

But again, this is not even the topic of discussion. I was simply pointing out we go head over heels to help them out, and several kids go out and ruin the image of the rest, putting shame on themselves and others.. all while the media blows it up and creates more hatred. Gatta keep that cycle going...

Yes, I have heard of Federal Student Aid, which incidentally requires you to be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national or a permanent resident. But I thought you told me to "go ahead and google Michigan tuition incentives"? Isn't that what you claimed existed that require living "first hand" to know anything about? Why are you pointing us at a federal agency's website instead? And is there a reason that you can only dream about FAFSA while these local Arabs you know and envy are getting free rides on it?

Yes, a federal agency called the Minority Business Development Agency exists. Where can I find information about tax and business incentives for Arabs in the state of Michigan on this website? You've scarcely dared to dream about them, so you must know some specific examples - or do you possess the capability to dream in the abstract?

This is actually perfectly on-topic, but I imagine you can't see that.

I never said anything about the state of Michigan website. I live in Michigan.. and I just pointed out to you two links where minorities are given preferential treatment over everyone else. I only threw out the 'google' comment so you could search yourself and find out for yourself, but no need now because I just provided the links to federal sites.

And you don't have to be a citizen to receive aid..
Be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen.
What that means is.. you can't have a wrap sheet of criminal history. The FAFSA money is handed out specifically to poor families and minorities. I personally have non-citizen friends who are receiving full tuition from the federal government based on their race/ethnicity. There's nothing to argue about it, because that's the way it is. I also have 1st hand knowledge in this because my mother is a secretary for a public institution that processes a lot of FAFSA paperwork.

Again, the topic is about 911 shirts kids had made, not this side track that you don't believe exists.

He is not totally full of shit but is just over generalizing. Yes, there are illegals here. However this is the highest concentration of Arabic people outside the Middle East and there is bound to be some "visitors". I was born and raised in Dearborn and most of the Arabic families have been here for 2-3 generations now. Of course there are some like he described but he may as well be talking about white and blacks because some of them, too, aren't citizen and get tuition breaks, tax, and business incentives. Those things aren't available to rich white kids so it sounds like there is some resentment. You can tell by this line" "Most of my Arabic friends I'm in college with get FREE college". BS imo (unless of course he only hangs out with poor Arab kids). Many of the Arabic kids I grew up with in Dearborn had families that were quite well off and paid for their college. You can't go into a gas station, party store, etc. in Dearborn that isn't owned by an Arabic person. Free college is available to all who demonstrate the financial need. Has nothing to do with white, black, or Arab. Get mad at your parents for making too much money... Same with me when I went to school, I could only get loans that needed to be repaid.

Anyhow, the contention was just because the media tells you they're American citizens doesn't mean they are. Well my nephew is a senior at Edsel and has gone to school with many of these kids since kindergarten and yes, they are citizens since being born here at Oakwood Hospital. Can't speak for every Arabic kid at Edsel though. That's has little to do with the fact that they did a stupid thing when designing that shirt. There is little grey area in anyone's mind around here that the "11" with windows on them represent the WTC and the Edsel mascot, the thunder chicken (thunder bird sorry, I went to a different Dearborn high school) was a plane.

There we have it, folks. Is "the thunder chicken" on the "no-fly" list yet? If not, we only have ourselves to blame.

God Bless 'Murka.
