Detecting newly installed memory

I recently installed some memory on my Dad's laptop, but in system properties it still displays the original 256 MB of ram. I was quite sure that you just stick it in there and you're set, so I guess the only options are that it's not in correctly or it's broken. Is that right?

Yup, detection is automatic. Make sure it's properly and fully seated.

It's possible it's not compatible. Laptops are very fussy. You can't just buy any memory. For client laptops and OEM systems I always order from Crucial.com and use their online database to match the memory to the particular system.

Are you adding or replacing with more. If adding, switch slots with the new and old ram and see what happens. Worth a shot. I had that prob with my old comp before.
