Detachable Face Car Radios are worthless !

This morning when I was walking out to my car at my apartments, I noticed a neighbor's car window was smashed in, their trunk was open and the contents were scattered out over the parking lot. I peeked inside their car, and their nice stereo was still there ! The face was detached and probably kept somewhere safe indoors.

How wonderful. The $300 radio was safe and sound. Lets not mention the $600 - $1000 worth of damage to the car the theif caused while he was searching for the face.

I was sick when I saw it. This same thing happened to me last year!

I learned from my experience. Now I don't detach the face. I unhook the entire radio and carry it inside with me.

Sad world, especially considering that these jerks probably only get $20 for the stolen radio. They cause hundreds of dollars worth of damage, and break into a car just for $20 ? Pathetic !

Honestly, I wish people like that would just die. I don't care that it's a 'minor offense' or if they can be rehabilitated or whatnot. This country is full of idiots, if we just eliminated all the obvious ones, we'd be better off.

Let me explain....

First, so he $600+ damage. That would be 600+ damage and a $300 missing stereo.

Or option 2.

They cause $600+ damage braking into the car and looking through it to see if you stashed the entire stereo under the seat, in the trunk, etc.

He literally sounds like everytime he parks, he uses the keys, unhooks the radio, and unhooks the wiring harnesses. And yes, I've never heard of a pull-out, but this doesn't sound like an instance of that

Once again, let me reiterate my situation.

My car has nothing of value in it. Period. Maybe if you really wanted some road flares.

I'm honestly thinking about putting a note in my center console, addressed to "The Guy Breaking Into My Car", that says in part, "Congrats, you've broken into a car with nothing of value in it. I'm curious how you even began to think anything expensive would be in a car as crappy looking as this one. Seriously, the most expensive thing in here is the collection of pennies in the center console. Just take it and cut your losses."

I put the CD player in my thunderbird, and it was held in place with a piece of paper I never even lock my doors, anyone could have opened my door and taken the radio with out any instruments what-so-ever...But no one ever did, and I even left the keys in the car most of the time.

You have some sort of attaching system so you dont have to rewire it all the time? Or do the wires unhook from the back of the cd player (Some do)?

People are not getting the point here.

The point of having a detachable face radio is supposed to be to prevent giving people a reason to break into your car.

It does not work.

I had two radios stolen. The second time I did have an alarm and a detachable face. They still broke my window. I am sick and tired of paying for this crap !

I only put my radio in for long trips, not the day to day. I just detach the harness.

Pullouts vs. detachable faceplates is like the Club vs. detachable steering wheel!

You'll look like a goof carrying the wheel (remember the clip with the old lady pretending to swerve in front of that guy?!) AND thugs will still drive off with your car with a pair of vice grips clamped to the shaft.

Detachable faces were developed as a more convenient alternative to the pull-out radio, which were commonplace in the 80s and early 90s.

My step-dad still has one in his '88 pick-up.

I bring my faceplate inside with me, so even if I lose by having my car broken into, the would-be thief doesn't win, and that's satisfying in itself.

Quite the opposite. My cousin had both Alpine and Pioneer Premier pull-outs. Those were some nice decks.

Where do you live?

If I could afford a nice stereo with a detachable faceplate, I'd take the faceplate out, and put a sticker on the main unit saying "FACEPLATE NOT KEPT IN CAR".

Then I'd put the faceplate under the seat. Either that, or find some handy way to mount the entire headunit in a center console, or have it recessed so that when I leave the car, I can put in the front of a crappy-looking stereo.

I'm a genious. Instead of just having a headunit with the face missing, make faceplates that go on that look like really crappy radios. Or vents. Or whatever.
