Buy cheapo CD-rs.. that seems to work for me, good data gets lost all the time due to the damn foil crumbling off.

By far the most entertaining method! 😀

I my college days we would peg them at the walls in the hallway to make them shatter. Or you can also take good scissors and cut wedges out all around the sides to make throwing stars out of them and find random things to throw them at.
 
A couple of strokes with a wire brush, with the CD on some newspaper to collect the metal flakes. Cheap, simple, easy to do and totally unreadable results.
