For Christ's sake, just make one deep scratch, with anything sharp, and it wouldn't read no matter what.

TechTv's The Screensavers had a little special about this very topic. They showed all these CD crushers and stuff. I think the ones that chop not only in long slices, but also horizontally as well (so you get little bitty squares) are the best.

I think the government has some stuff that could still read the CD.

For all practical purposes, yes, a deep scratch would do the trick. But if you really need absolute protection, you need to destroy it into small slices.

Give it to your children, and tell them it is important. If you do not have children, by all means make some. They are useful for this particular purpose.

What if they try to sell it instead?

Put it in for about 3 or 4 seconds and you'll see it flash and the foil
will be fractured but the disc will still be whole.

I've never let a microwave run on one more than 3 or 4 seconds max.

I just take a ballpoint pen and press down really hard writing on the top of the CD.

microwave for 2 seconds, then pop it into a 52x CD-ROM drive and let the fun happen (by the way, i know what the question asked)
